As a Christian how do you love Jesus? Is respecting his directives considered loving Him? Or is it necessary on an emotional level?
I think that Love is primarily an action word in the Bible. Jesus said, If you love me you will keep my commands. To me, loving Jesus means to regard him in a way that what I do for Him is more important than what I do for me. Emotions can be uncertain and changing, but committed love will cause the loving feeling to be.

Much love!

Dear Ernie, of course, it is necessary on an emotional level—how could we not feel this way? He is wonderful, patient, attentive, loving, and profoundly kind. Truly, none is like Him. He is one with God; He is God. He promised that those who love Him would never be alone, and it is true—He is always present for His sheep, for those who love and follow Him.

When we keep Him in our hearts, love naturally leads us to follow His guidance. Jesus is the only way to eternal life, and everything He did and said was meant to save us from sin and offer us everlasting life. He calls us to holiness, to be holy as God is holy.

Blessings.

We're told to love God with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength (Deuteronomy 6:5). Although "heart" meant "the seat of your will and intentions" in that culture rather than the seat of the emotions as it is in our culture, as I read it, loving with God with all "heart, mind, soul, and strength" includes BOTH loving God emotionally and expressing that love in works.

Similarly, it the famous "Simon, do you love me?" vignette (John 21:15-19), Jesus uses both "agape" (sacrificial love) and "phileo" (friendship love, or what we would call "like"). I think in this vignette, Jesus affirms that "liking" Him as a friend is a good and desirable thing - and He's telling us He wants to see us express that emotional bond in deeds of love.

In the days of Jesus, the religious leaders were constantly questioning Jesus in order to test Him and on this occasion a lawyer asked Jesus what is the great commandment?

Matthew (22:35) Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying, (36) Master, which is the great commandment in the law?

Jesus reply was the 1st great commandment was to love God and the 2nd was to love ones neighbor. These were given as a commandment for man to love.

Matthew (22:37) Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

(38) This is the first and great commandment. (39) And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

One should note that by following the 1st and 2nd great commandment they will be adhering to the 10 commandments issued by Moses. If they love the Lord they won’t have any other Gods before him, or make any graven images or take his name in vain, they will remember his Sabbath and if they love their neighbor they will honor their Father and Mother and they won’t kill or commit adultery or steal or bear false witness nor will they covet. This is why Jesus goes on to state that on these two commandments hang the law and the prophets. Because by fulfilling these two commandments one fulfills the law.

(40) On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

Jesus stated that these 2 commandments where the 2 great commandments however the following verses will show that these commandments were not new and that the Jews and Jesus was speaking to were aware of them. These were the same ones issued to Israel by Moses.

Deuteronomy (6:5) And thy shall love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.

Leviticus (19:18) Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the LORD.

Now that it has been established that man was commanded to love one needs to examine the scriptures to get an understanding of the love required in these great commandments.

In the following verses Moses is telling the Israelites that God chose them strictly out of His love for them.Deuteronomy (7:7) The LORD did not set his love upon you, nor choose you, because ye were more in number than any people; for ye were the fewest of all people: (8) But because the LORD loved you, and because he would keep the oath which he had sworn unto your fathers, hath the LORD brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you out of the house of bondmen, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.

(9) Know therefore that the LORD thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations;

Note in verse (9) Moses states a condition that God requires in order for Him to keep covenant and have mercy. And that is an individual must love God and keep His commandments. The scriptures will show that there is only one way to love God and that is by keeping His commandments.

Note that Jesus states in the following verse that in order to love Him one has to keep His commandments.

John (14:15) If ye love me, keep my commandments.

Jesus further defines the love He requires when He states in the following verse that those who have His commandments and keep them are those that love Him. One does not have to guess at Jesus definition of love He made it clear.

John (14:21) He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.

Jesus also reinforced what was said in Deuteronomy verse (9) by adding that those that love Him will be loved by the Father. How does one love Jesus? by keeping His commandments and Moses said God will keep covenant and have mercy with those who keep His commandments. So therefore by following Jesus one shall receive love from Him as well as mercy from the Father.

Note in these scriptures it did not say those who profess their love for Jesus or those that claim that Jesus knows what in their heart. Jesus made a clear and direct statement if one has His commandments and keeps them they are the ones who love Him. The statement that Jesus made as well as the condition Moses gave in Deuteronomy verse (9) were based on behalf of an individuals actions not their feeling or emotions or conditions. To exhibit love towards Jesus one must engage in a specific action and that action is being obedience to the word of God. And one will see that they are to be obedient regardless of their feeling or the surrounding circumstances.

This is it in a nutshell...

Jesus said....
John 4.15, "If ye love me, keep my commandments."

Matthew 22:35-40
22.35 Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying,
22.36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law?
22.37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
22.38 This is the first and great commandment.
22.39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
22.40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

1 Johnn 4:19-21
4.19 We love him, because he first loved us.
4.20 If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?
4.21 And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.

How to love Jesus?
"Keep His Commandments" = Yes, But Which Ones?:

I have decided to follow Jesus?

Amen.
There are the ten Commandments my friend, the ones God called himself the Covenant, written by the hand of God himself, given to Moses and placed in the Ark of the Covenant, these are for both Jews and Gentiles, Jesus was teaching them openly and said to keep the commandments to enter into life, they are all about Love for God and our neighbour. Jesus did say to keep them if we love him. Jesus explained also how to keep them, from a loving heart.

Blessings

Just not feelin' it today, Ernie?

That's okay. It happens. Some people just aren't wired that way.

Speaking of wired a particular way, ever see this, where it shows this shows that the circumcision by the Spirit in our hearts enables us to love God with all our hearts

Deut 30:6 And the LORD thy God will circumcise thine heart, and the heart of thy seed, to love the LORD thy God with all thine heart,
and with all thy soul, that thou mayest live.

The very "love of" God is shed abroad in our hearts by His Spirit

Romans 5:5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because "the love of" God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost
which is given unto us.

As John writes,

1 John 4:19 We love him, because he first loved us.

Col 2:11 In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh
by the circumcision of Christ

1 John 4:10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

These might be helpful to you, using a few scriptural examples

Here is how they were showing him love

Ezek 33:31 And they come unto thee as the people cometh, and they sit before thee as my people, and they hear thy words, but they will not do them: for with their mouth they shew much love, but their heart goeth after their covetousness.

Lots of love songs going on over here

Ezek 33:32 And, lo, thou art unto them as a very lovely song of one that hath a pleasant voice, and can play well on an instrument:
for they hear thy words,
but they do them not.

And so hear his words but they do not do them, Jesus says,

Matt 7:24 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock

The above are called wise, James encourages us to be doers of the word

James 1:22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.

Because we are only deceiving our ownselves, Jesus again on hearers only

Mat 7:26 And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand

And there you have it, both the wise and foolish who will be both awaiting their Lords return

James says,

James 1:23 For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:

James 1:24 For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.

Of the natural man it says

1 Cr 2:14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them,
because they are spiritually discerned
.

Compare the above

He is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass

With beholding the glory of the Lord in a glass

2 Cr 3:18 But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.

Comparing what Ezekiel says here, "for with their mouth they shew much love"

With what John says here

1 John 3:18 My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.

Comparing what Ezekiel says here

"they sit before thee as my people, and they hear thy words, but they will not do them"

Now again with what James says here

James 1:22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.

Same is shown here with the love of God,

1 John 5:3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.

To such Jesus will manifest himself

John 14:21 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father,
and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him
.

And He that loveth me not

John 14:24 He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me.

In these is the love of God is perfected

1 John 2:5 But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.

The way to love God is by embodying His likeness through being a doer of His character traits. For example, the way to love justice is by being a doer of justice, the way to love holiness is by being a doer of God's instructions for how to be holy as He is holy, and so forth. In other words, the goal of everything that God has commanded is to teach us how to love different aspects of His character trait, which is why the Bible repeatedly says in both the OT and the NT that that way to love God is by obeying His commandments. The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact likeness of His character (Hebrews 1:3), which he embodied through his works by setting sinless example for us to follow of how to walk in obedience to God's law, so the way to love the Father is exactly the same as the way to love the Son.
