So, it is OK to go ahead and perfectly
Disobey? His command to:
"Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way,
SELL whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven:
and come, take up the cross, and follow Me." (
Mark 10:21 AV)???
I can see you like many others do not understand this passage. It is not at all acceptable to perfectly disobey His command. When Jesus told the rich young ruler, “One thing you lack: go your way, sell whatever you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, take up the cross, and follow Me” (Mark 10:21),
He was not laying down a new law for everyone to sell all they own. Jesus, being God, saw directly into that man’s heart. He knew that the man’s riches were his true master, and that his wealth stood between him and full obedience to God. The command to sell everything was a test of love and faith. Jesus used it to reveal that the man’s heart was tied to his possessions, not to the Lord. The man claimed to keep all the commandments, but he failed the greatest one that was to love God with all his heart, soul, and strength. The story shows that it is not enough to keep the commandments outwardly;
they must be kept with a sincere heart that puts God above all things.
For some, money is the idol that takes God’s place. For others, it might be pride, power, or comfort. Jesus said, “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:21). The rich man’s treasure was on earth, not in heaven. That is why he walked away sad. Jesus never condemned having possessions, but He warned against being possessed by them. His point was that anything we place above obedience to God becomes sin. When He said, “Take up the cross and follow Me,” He called the man—and all who believe—to surrender whatever keeps them from full devotion to God. The message is the same today: it is not about selling everything, but about removing whatever stands between us and the Lord.
Jesus’ words as the son of God, the Christ, were a loving challenge, not a command to all to live without property. He wanted the man to see his own heart clearly, to understand that he loved wealth more than God. Eternal life does not come from riches, status, or outward obedience,
but from a heart that truly loves God and follows His commandments with faith and humility.
