I'm curious on how the breath of life sustains people who are considered as spiritually dead. Like in the valley of dry bones. In that valley were bones of people who may still have been walking the earth but they were spiritually dead. Are all people basically on something like spiritual life support from God to keep them from just dropping dead on the spot like Ananias?
Interesting question. Thanks.
In my view, the breath of life sustains physical life only.
If we think about childbirth, a soul (personal identity) is created at conception. (DNA)
The breath of life does not happen until the child is born and takes its first breath?
Thus beginning the lifelong journey of physical life. (outside the womb)
Or, alternatively, the breath of life only applies to Adam. not anyone else.
(since physical/spiritual life begins at conception.

Sorry, I don't think I really addressed your question.
But felt that I needed to lay some foundational groundwork first.

Even the animals have the breath of life. I don't think it only applies to Adam. It applying to animals also supports the notion that the breath of life sustains physical life. I'm not going to jump to the conclusion that it sustains physical life only, due to Jesus breathing on the disciples to give them the Holy Spirit.

Seems more like there is a poorly known or understood role the Spirit of God has in sustaining all life. And in Gen 6:3 God limited the amount of time he would contend with mortal humans. I don't think the shorter lifespan is caused by God revoking the breath of life early. But it is written he 'contends' with man, so I think that part confirms the Spirit of God has a thankless role in sustaining all life.

I believe the soul is a more ethereal thing. When Man is referred to as a living soul in the KJV I think it is not speaking of the same thing, but the more archaic use of soul to refer to persons. Like is used on passenger manifests.

Why we sleep seems poorly understood, We sleep to feel refreshed, and if we don't sleep we eventually die. It reportedly eliminates toxins, and refreshes glycogen. It is important for memory consolidation.

This article points to all living things needing sleep. Not just creatures with brains. We can ask why do all animals need to sleep.

Makes me think there is something to it. "To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord," may refer to sleep in addition to other states where our consciousness leaves the body. Does this connection with God shared by all living creatures bestow something to them?

Summary for those who sleep, who is raised at the last day:
Genesis 3:19 "until you return to the ground, since you were taken from it. For you are dust, and you will return to dust.”
Daniel 12:2 "those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake"
Psalms 37:29 "But the righteous shall inherit the earth, and dwell upon it for ever"
Psalms 37:11 "But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace."
John 12:48 The one who rejects Me and does not accept My teachings has one who judges him: the word which I spoke. That will judge him on the last day. John 6:44 No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.

Summary for those who shall not sleep, the little flock who goes to Heaven who shares in the first resurrection:
Luke 12:32 "Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom"
1 Cor 15:51-53 "Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed— 52 in an instant, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. 53 For the perishable must be clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality.

Hebrews 3:1 "so, dear brothers and sisters who belong to God and are partners with those called to heaven"
Luke 22:28-30 "And I confer on you a kingdom, just as my Father conferred one on me, 30 so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel."
Rev 20:5-6 "Blessed and holy is the one who shares in the first resurrection. The second death has no power over these; they will be priests of God and of Christ, and they will reign with him for [the] thousand years."
