Good post, thanks. This is a wonderful Scripture, for as our Lord said to Peter, only the Father could have given this knowledge to Peter: For it was the truth that Peter uttered in response to our Lord's question, 'Whom say ye that I am?' that was the basis upon which the Lord said He would build His church:- 'Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.'
My point was that Christ was establishing His church long before the end of the book of the Acts of the Apostles.
And there are various opinions about what "rock" the church would be built upon.
I am of the persuasion that it was based on that which was being revealed by His Father in heaven.
And not the singular thing about Jesus being the Christ, but everything that would be revealed by the Father.
It was the HOW that Jesus was responding to, not the WHAT. IMHO
To the question “Who do people say the Son of Man is?”,
“Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”
These are human opinions. (flesh and blood) But what about Peter's response? Human opinion? No!
Matthew 16:17 NIV
Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven.
