By the sheer scale of destruction and death in such a small strip of land which is the result of indiscriminate bombing. At least 65,000 dead and 20,000 of those are children. Aid workers have been killed by the IDF, as well as journalists.

That is, if you believe those stats, which, considering the source, may not be reliable. But if you do believe them, then you should also believe that Gaza's population has steadily increased, per the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics. If the goal was "ethnic cleansing," then they're doing a terrible job at it. That objective also doesn't make sense for several reasons. For one, if they wanted to cleanse Gaza, they could have done so easily a long time ago and without much difficulty. They certainly wouldn't allow ethnic Palestinians, up to 20%, to live in Israel and be part of their government and military. And they wouldn't have unilaterally withdrawn from Gaza in 2005 if that was their goal.

The only reason they went back in is because over 1,000 of their citizens, mostly civilians, were slaughtered and taken captive. And that was just the culmination of 18 years of repeated rocket attacks. So, I'm not sure why their response is somehow considered disproportionate or inappropriate. The goal in any war is to win, not to fight fair. Regardless, Israel isn't indiscriminately bombing, as they are being accused of, but they have a long documented history of trying to minimize civilian casualties.

You have to ask yourself, why would Hamas attack Israel knowing what their response would be? The answer is simple: because they wanted them to do it. Hamas has a well-known history of hiding behind civilians and civilian buildings, like hospitals. In part, because it's a deterrent against being attacked, but also because civilian deaths help their cause. It's always been a propaganda war first and foremost. They can never beat Israel militarily, but they can use civilian deaths to beat Israel in a propaganda war. To their credit, they've been very successful at that because they know Westerners are especially sensitive to such propaganda. And you can know it's propaganda because the world pays no attention when civilians die elsewhere, like in Sudan, Syria, or, to a lesser extent, Ukraine.
