I have a laptop that came with Windows 11 home in S mode. I used it that way for two years with no issues. However, I bought a new Desktop with Windows 11 home, and it did not come in S mode. My gripe. S mode requires me to use the Microsoft store to download software, for "security", On my desktop, the Microsoft store has wider and better choices to download from. So, the Microsoft store limits software that they recommend on S mode. I say it's about money, because in S mode some apps I want cost money from the store, but on Windows 11 home the same apps are free in the Microsoft store.

Does anyone know more of a difference?

Well, I got out of S mode on my laptop. I checked the app store and the apps, that formerly cost some, are now free. I notice zero speed issues and is possible faster now. I believe S mode is a waste now that I decided i wanted my word processor and not theirs. Also, some word processors on the app store would let you use it and then you couldn't print without paying $50 for the "upgrade". As I said before, I believe the S mode was a money maker and not a security effort that Microsoft claimed. Free internet downloads cost money at the app store.

Then you know how to go to systems settings and go to about and see what operating system you have. I didn't know either until I went to download a word processor. I was told it wasn't compatible in "S" mode. I let it slide for awhile thinking it was a good thing, until I questioned why the firewall and brick garden selections by software vendors who had to pay money and charge a fee to be in the app store. It is a pay to play scheme with a promise of money to the vendors by Microsoft. I did building automation systems for the gov't , I retired from.

Hey R...
I just got a new laptop.
It was trying to get me to use the microsoft browser. (Edge)

If a computer company tries to force me to use THEIR product...whatever it may be...
I DO NOT use it.

This used to be called a monopoly.
Plus, it's just not moral.

And I don't even care how much better it might be.

Sorry I can't reply directly to your inquiry...
just wanted to make this comment.

Hi there, "S" mode is only on Windows 11 home. Not the pro or enterprise. I got my laptop 2 yrs ago and used a word processor from the app store and I used it, but it was constantly badgering me to "upgrade" I just deleted it. All I need is a word processor, not office software for spreadsheets. If you have Windows 11 home the Edge browser is the default shell that other browsers will work through. It is still a monopoly; you have to use Linux to leave it. Because you cannot write a program without running it through Microsoft debug software to make it compatible for Windows, same for Mack computers too.

Do you mean that even though I use Google or Bing as my browser,,,
it's still running through Edge??

And I agree...for us plain folk...any word program will do.
I use Apache, it's free and legal and is all I need for home use.
