The US military does not go to war with the intention of not achieving it's objectives. It simply wasn't able to achieve them in Vietnam, just as it wasn't able to achieve it's objectives in Afghanistan.

Large armies are very good at fighting other armies. What they're not very good at is fighting insurgents.

The fact that you don't see the parallels between this and the Iraq war in 2003, is both shocking and sad. It was said back then that if we just get rid of Saddam, the Iraqis will take over and the country will become a democracy.

Well that didn't happen, did it? It turned out to be a very complicated situation. The United States eventually gave up and pulled out. Without Saddam in the picture, that created a power vacuum which then lead to the creation of ISIS.
