This is something I've been working on with some success. Jesus said a lot about being humble. I'm trying to put his commandments into action in my own life. I'm curious as to how the rest of you pursue humility over haughtiness.

Arrogance and Pride in Evil Ways, God Hates

Prov 8:
[13] The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.

However Pride in one’s upstanding accomplishments is not Hated.

Gal 6:
[4] But let every man prove his own work, and then shall he have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another.

And Pride extended to an others upstanding accomplishments is not Hated.

2 Cor 7:
[4] Great is my boldness of speech toward you, great is my glorying of you: I am filled with comfort, I am exceeding joyful in all our tribulation.

Glory to God,
Taken

Simply understand and take to heart that in and of ourself--we are little more than death waiting to pass. Scum, destined to fail and collapse under our own weight. I am well aware--and I remember that.

But now--I am who God says I am--saved.

Thank you for the question.

It is definitely a temptation to boast about accomplishments, even when we know deep down all of our successes come from God. To help us avoid becoming supercilious, it is a good idea to carry out daily self-evaluations, as part of daily prayers.

Benjamin Franklin wrote that at the end of each day, he would evaluate himself against his dozen principles for behavior, with humility being one. He also said it was the hardest to self-evaluate: too easy to rationalize ”explaining” an accomplishment, but also easy to fall prey to overdone self-criticism.

Blessings.

Beholding we become changed. That's it!
Everything else is short lived and a set up for discouragement.

Is it accurate to say that ego is self-adulation or self-exaltation? Nobody likes pomposity but many engage in it, particularly when debating theology. It's prevalent.

On a similar line, I think it was also Lewis who said a truly humble man doesn't think of himself as a worm. In fact, he doesn't think of himself at all.

I'm not sure if this will help, but I stay humble by developing "abject egotism" where the ego is so against being 'engaged' (used) that it resists attempts to be used at all.

I might be watching a sports match and I will think "I'm only barracking for the team that is heading east" (the teams switch sides, if you will remember). Or I will be at dinner and I will think "I'm not eating the thing I want most until the very end". Or "I will only pray one thing, before I go to bed".

By not letting myself enjoy my ego, I have a clearer understanding how to be humble; but I must admit, it is not that successful, as I am tempted only to be that way when it suits me.

You can always remember Jesus saying "the proud will be humbled and the humbled exalted"

Humility does not tell others how humble it is.

There is a difference between "how humble it is" and "how it is humble". My apologies if I confused you, but you seem to have got the two mixed up.

Everyone has a different ego, working out how your ego works, is not a sin.
