I think music preaching can have a place outside the church. As a form of spreading the gospel to the world. It can break the ice with non believers as music can appeal to the heart and spirit. Like David did for Saul.
Indeed, the church has and is missing a great evangelizing opportunity in secular music. There is actually quite a bit that is unto the Lord. A lot of love songs are really to God, and the "baby baby" and "oh darlings" are just substitute. In some songs there is actually a "God" verse that give it all away.

Our town has a graffiti week celebration every year and I tried to convince the church leaders to have the worship "band" put on a Christian oldies concert...but they wouldn't hear of it, yet have no problem rockin rollizing the typical Christian songs and hymns on Sunday mornings. :(

Sure...but a show is a show, and worship is worship. A show is for people--and that's great--but worship is unto God, and that is a whole different act.
Yes. Concerts are entertainment. Not Worship. Worship isn't entertainment. Worship goes out from self. Entertainment...enter... into self....and is contained in self. It is in fact the opposite to worship, and is more harmful than good. It appeases the flesh and carnal nature of man but contributes little to edification and godliness.
I think however there are a few excellent Christian artists who genuinely evangelise using their musical talents to do so. Keith Green was an early example of that. He wasn't at his piano to entertain. He was leading people to Christ... making people think differently about religious talking points. Today, I don't know. I think theres a fine line between evangelism in music and selling records (Keith gave heaps away). Just as there is a fine line between prosperity gospel and the true evangelism. But once that line is crossed, the gospel is corrupted.

Yeah, the problem is not music at all, it's worship that has become more entertainment than worship and is no real substitute.

On the other hand entertainment in and of itself is just like another tree in the garden, some having good fruit and some not so good. I love music, and Christians ought to engage in beautiful pursuits, plant flowers, paint, and yes music--even as a vocation whether it is directly evangelism or not. To do it well is a gift from God--and if it seems little more than wallpaper or a waste of time, God has purpose in it whether we appreciate it or not.

But worship...art an music, etc. can be worship--but--watching others worship (if that's what they want to call it) is not worship; and we can even cheer them on in their worship--but the cheering is not worship, it's a Hallelujah or an Amen at best.
