It was a good speech... sensible, common sense. He noted that the Democrats voted against the no tax on tips, etc!

I don't really understand the tipping industry in America. Their the only country that does it. Here and in Europe you can tip someone if you want but it's not expected at all. Their employer pays them to do their job.

Why don't employers pay their workers properly in America?
Why do people have to rely on tips?
Why must customers pay tips?
Do you have to tip at McDonalds or other fast food outlets? If not then why
What if i buy a bed or a fridge, do i have to tip that salesperson? If not then why
It seems to be only at a restaurant. Why?

Seems like a scam to me where the employers are ripping off employees, forcing customers to pay more to cover the employees wages

Restaurant owners in America seem to be getting away with robbery. Under paying staff so that people must pay more than the meal price in order to tip the waiter/waitress.

The minimum wage keeps rising. However if the minimum wage gets too high, then the cost of even a hamburger will rise dramatically, so your average American will eat out less.

The only other people I tip are the taxi drivers.

Tipping is a very American thing, like the imperial measuring system. It's only done in America, and is ridiculous in my opinion.

Everywhere else it's just an option to tip. Most people don't tip and we don't get ridiculed or confronted for it.

Restaurants simply pay the staff accordingly and it all gets covered in the cost of the meal. No need to pay more than is listed.

Over there staff are underpaid in the first place so the restaurant owners are taking advantage of their staff. That's the problem

Waiters get minimum wage plus tips.
But many other people get minimum wage but are not in an industry that has a tipping culture, they dont get tips. That's very unfair

Tipping is a form of charity. Somebody does a good job, or over and above what their job requires, a tip shows your appreciation for their extra effort or time.

What I don't agree with is mandatory tipping which has somehow become a thing the last 10-15 years or so.

A waiter/waitress serves you as an individual from the time you enter the restaurant or establishment, answers requests like a refill on a drink, they check to make sure your meal is to your satisfaction. They actually EARN a little extra appreciation for the job they do.
A person working at McDonalds has one function. One person fries, another assembles, another takes your order, etc.
And each employee receives their own hourly wage for doing their specific function.

McDonalds and other fastfood establishments were created as entry level or even retirement supplemental jobs,
Not a career.

Waiters and waitresses do make their profession careers a lot. They get familiar with their customers, they know when you walk in the door, where you prefer to sit, what you usually order for a beverage, even ask how the grandkids are.
It can be more personal and on a friendly level.
Sadly most of those days have gone and it would be nice if we could get them back.

I don't believe there ever should have been a "tax" on tips. That in my opinion is the government taking credit for a job you did well.
Now if you don't do well, you shouldn't get a tip.
The better the job and the more care they take for their customers the bigger the tip.
No establishment should force you to give generously and thankfully for a job well done.

Tips are a charity given to those who have done well.

If you have a good restaurant then the employees should receive good wages.
Tips should come after and be untaxed as a charitable Thank You.

No Tax on Tips makes perfect sense.
It's what we call Common Sense.

And only we can change it.
Your not getting paid enough? Find another job, negotiate for higher pay, or open your own restaurant.
No one holds a person down more than the person holding themselves down.

The latest thing is when you go to pay with your credit card...they swing the screen around and show you your tipping options....they start at 20% and go up...though they do give you an option to select your own tip amount.

Thing is...this new tipping method is presented to you when all you did was tell a person your order...with no service provided....yet the tipping screen is presented.
I've even heard of people placing their own order at a kiosk and then the kiosk asking for a tip.

I do order my food from the grocery store and door dash delivers.
They have an automatic 10% tip for the driver on top of the stores delivery fee which can vary to how soon or between what times you want delivery.
I try to take into account that door dash drivers, they have to pay their own gas, locate where you are, (sometimes gps plays games) ,
deliver it to your door. And sometimes will bring it in if you as them.
You're not allowed to tip them outside the amount you checked on the order. But 100% of all tips do go to the driver.
If I have the same driver and they do a good job I will increase to maybe 15% or even 20% of the order.
Or if the weather is unusually bad and they have to navigate in it.

I don't know how much door dash pays their drivers or if they are given a fuel card.
I just know if they do a good job they should be compensated for it, one way or another.
It is their own vehicle and they have to maintain it, register it, insure it, and make sure it is inspected.
although sometimes you have to ask How the hell did that pass inspection? lol

If I have a lousy driver and they leave my food at the garage at the end of the driveway, even though they have explicit instructions where to bring them.
Next time they only get the 10% which I really have no control over the minimum.

Things have changed so much since I was in 20's and 30's.
The world just isn't the same anymore.

Tipping culture is very American. It doesn't happen here in Australia or Europe or anywhere else. Sure we can tip someone if we like but rarely does someone do that.

To us the person at McDonalds or at the restaurant or driving a cab or delivering a pizza are all employed to do their specific jobs. No reason to tip anyone. Do the job your employed to do and your boss pays you, not me.

To us thats just insane. Paying some one 20% more to deliver your goods when their already being paid by their employee to do so.
WoW. As if its a really hard job to do. They have electronic GPS now that shows you the way. Not like in my day when I delivered pizzas I just had an old fashion map in a book.

I remember using a GPS to drive from Florida to Maine. You would be surprised how many side trips it wanted to direct me on. Luckily I had a pretty good idea where I was headed but nevertheless.

I used to have this saying
I would drive up to the Dunin Donuts driveup window and order me a Large Coffee Extra Cream Extra Sugar and a Griddle sausage egg and cheese sandwich. The person driving up behind me, I never looked to see who was in it.
I as the cashier, How much is the next cars order?
If it was $10 or less I pay the bill and drive away. If over $10. I would put that towards their bill and tell the cashier to tell them Have a nice day.
Funny how sometimes that pay it forward would come back to you in ways you would never believe.
Someone fix your flat tire on the side of the road for instance.
Happened to me a lot.

I'm just saying. Be a cheerful giver and you may get a blessing in the end.
