What is the atonement?

How far can we go in explaining the atonement (reconciliation)?

Romans 5:11​

And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, ​

by whom we have now received the atonement​

2 Cor 5:18​

And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, ​

and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation​

Isaiah 53:6​

All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; ​

and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.​

Another way of asking the same question, might be "how does Jesus' death and resurrection save us"?

Forgiveness of sins patently visible for any who care to avail themselves.

Yes, I agree the visible image of Jesus dying on the cross is effective in helping us to accept His sacrifice for our sins so we can be forgiven.

I would like to dig even further to ask why, or how, Jesus' death atoned for our sins.
