Jesus was scouraged in the common hall which was in the city, so He did suffer there also

24 When Pilate saw that he could not prevail, but rather that a tumult was beginning, he took water and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, “I am innocent of the blood of this just person. See ye to it.”

25 Then answered all the people and said, “His blood be on us, and on our children!”

26 Then released he Barabbas unto them; and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered Him to be crucified.

27 Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the common hall, and gathered unto Him the whole detachment of soldiers.

28 And they stripped Him and put on Him a scarlet robe.

29 And when they had plaited a crown of thorns, they put it upon His head and a reed in His right hand, and they bowed their knees before Him and mocked Him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!”

30 And they spat upon Him, and took the reed and smote Him on the head.

31 And after they had mocked Him, they took the robe off from Him and put His own raiment on Him, and led Him away to crucify Him.

32 And as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name; him they compelled to bear His cross.

33 And when they had come unto a place called Golgotha, that is to say, a Place of a Skull,

34 they gave Him vinegar to drink mingled with gall. And when He had tasted thereof, He would not drink.

35 And they crucified Him and parted His garments, casting lots, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet: “They parted My garments among them, and upon My vesture did they cast lots.”

36 And sitting down, they watched Him there,

37 and set up over His head His accusation, written: This Is Jesus The King Of The Jews.

``````````````````````````````````````````
While we often focus on Calvary/Golgotha when thinking about the physical suffering of Jesus, scripture clearly records that a major portion of His immense physical and emotional suffering—the scourging, the beating, the spatting, and the cruel mocking—took place right there inside the city, within the confines of the Praetorium ("the common hall").
The Suffering Inside the City
As Matthew 27:26–30 shows, Jesus endured severe torture at the hands of the Roman soldiers before He ever walked out to the execution site:
  1. The Scourging (v. 26): Roman scourging was done with a flagrum (a whip laced with pieces of bone or metal). This brutal whipping was administered by Roman soldiers within the governor's quarters inside the city. This resulted in severe gouging of the skin, actually tearing and ripping, major wounding.
  2. The Stripping & Mockery (vv. 28–29): The whole detachment (cohort) of Roman soldiers gathered inside the hall. They stripped Him, forced a scarlet robe onto His wounded body, placed a crown of sharp thorns on His head, and handed Him a reed as a fake royal scepter.
  3. The Physical Assault (v. 30): They spat on Him, took the reed, and repeatedly struck Him on the head, driving the thorns deeper into His brow.
Scriptural Significance: Suffering Inside vs. Dying Outside
The Bible presents a meaningful distinction between what took place inside the city limits and what took place outside:
  • Inside the City: Jesus was condemned, mocked, beaten, and scourged. He bore the shame, public humiliation, and cruel physical abuse right in the middle of Jerusalem.
  • Outside the Gates: As the Apostle Paul notes in Hebrews 13:11–12, Jesus was then led out beyond the city wall to die:
    "For the bodies of those beasts, whose blood is brought into the sanctuary by the high priest for sin, are burned without [outside] the camp. Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate."
His redemptive work encompassed both—the painful, humiliating suffering inside the Praetorium hall within the city, followed by His ultimate sacrifice outside the city walls on the cross.
I always think he was crucified out side the city, so He did suffer outside the gate, as in the crucifixion was attested to there.
This here agrees with historical scholarship
When Jesus was before Pilate, was this within the city of Jerusalem
  • Matthew 27:27 — "Then the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium [often translated as 'governor’s headquarters' or 'common hall'] and gathered the whole company of soldiers around him."
  • Mark 15:16 — "The soldiers led Jesus away inside the palace (that is, the Praetorium) and called together the whole company of soldiers."
  • John 18:28 — "Then the Jewish leaders took Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor [Praetorium]. By now it was early morning, and to avoid ceremonial uncleanness they did not enter the palace, because they wanted to be able to eat the Passover."
Yes, the trial of Jesus before Pontius Pilate took place within the historical city limits of Jerusalem (or immediately adjacent to its inner defensive walls).
While the exact site of the trial continues to be debated among biblical scholars and archaeologists, both primary historical candidates location-wise are situated within the ancient boundary of 1st-century Jerusalem:
The Two Main Candidate Locations
1. The Praetorium at Herod’s Palace (Western Hill)
  • The Location: Situated near the modern-day Jaffa Gate and the Citadel (Tower of David).
  • Historical Context: Most modern historians and biblical scholars consider this the most probable location. When Roman governors like Pontius Pilate traveled from their primary headquarters in Caesarea Maritima to Jerusalem during major Jewish festivals (like Passover), they typically resided in the luxurious royal residence built by Herod the Great.
  • Archaeological Evidence: Excavations near the Citadel have uncovered large stone pavements, massive walls, and staircases matching descriptions of the governor's tribunal (Bema) where Pilate sat to issue judgments.
2. The Antonia Fortress (Northern Wall of the Temple Mount)
  • The Location: Positioned directly adjacent to the northwestern corner of the Temple Mount.
  • Historical Context: Traditional Christian pilgrimage routes (such as the Via Dolorosa) traditionally place Pilate's judgment seat here. The fortress housed the Roman military garrison stationed to monitor activity within the Temple courts.
  • Archaeological Evidence: Under the Convent of the Sisters of Zion, archaeologists uncovered a large paved area known as the Lithostrotos (or Gabbatha in Aramaic, mentioned in Gospel of John 19:13), though scholars debate whether these particular paving stones date to the 1st century or the 2nd century AD rebuilding under Emperor Hadrian.
Summary
Regardless of whether Pilate was presiding at Herod's Palace (on the western side of the city) or the Antonia Fortress (on the northern edge of the Temple complex), both locations were located inside the city of Jerusalem. From there, Jesus was led outside the city walls to Golgotha (the Place of the Skull) for the crucifixion, as Roman execution sites were required by law to be outside municipal boundaries.
The last thing said there is important to understand. By law the Romans could not crucify people "outside municipal boundaries", so they could not have possibly crucified Jesus within the city of Jerusalem. And what is in question here is where Jesus was actually crucified since that is how the text in Revelation 11:8 is worded ("where also our Lord was crucified").
Babylon is a symbolic entity and, though it is described as a woman/harlot and also as "the great city", it is neither a literal woman nor a literal earthly city. I believe it is the spiritual opposite of the New Jerusalem that is the mother of all believers (Galatians 4:26). Babylon, in contrast, is not the mother of believers, but instead is the mother of harlots (Revelation 17:5) and the inhabitants of the earth (unbelievers) are "made drunk with the wine of her fornication".
Yes, but the question is not where He suffered, but where He was crucified. That was outside of the city of Jerusalem. So, if someone is going to claim that Babylon represents the city of Jerusalem because they think Jesus was crucified in the city of Jerusalem, that is simply not true.
Controversial? Ha... no, it "IS" a false doctrine! You are becoming like honey that attracts flies here—the false teachers and laymen who promote Preterism and their first-century fulfillment theories coming down on you. By opening the door to these doctrines, you risk giving false teachers a platform to spread teachings that lead people away from the truth of Scripture.
Paul warned that grievous wolves would enter among God's people and that men would arise, speaking perverse things to draw disciples after themselves (Acts 20:29–30). We are commanded to test every teaching against Scripture (Acts 17:11) and to contend earnestly for the faith once delivered unto the saints (Jude 1:3).
The issue is not merely whether Preterism is controversial; the issue is whether its teachings stand up to the whole counsel of God. We must not allow first-century fulfillment theories nonsenses to distort the biblical teaching concerning, the stones of temple falling, the army, the beast, Christ's glorious return, the resurrection of the dead, and the final judgment.
Do not become bait for 70AD false teachers. Be a Berean: examine the Scriptures carefully yourself, expose error, and stand firmly for the truth.
I accept what the following scriptures indicate, which was that He was crucified outside of Jerusalem, and you do not.
John 19:20 Then many of the Jews read this title, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin.
Hebrews 13:12 Therefore Jesus also, that He might sanctify the people with His own blood, suffered outside the gate.
I accept the fact of scripture that shows Jesus crucifixion started in Jerusalem when pilate washed hands, he was beaten and shed his precious blood in Jerusalem with Revelation 11:8 being (The Great City Jerusalem) where the Lord Jesus was crucified
Revelation 11:8KJV
8 And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified.
Where was He actually crucified? That's what is in question here. Not where He was beaten or sentenced to death. You're trying to get around that. Where was the cross that Jesus was crucified on located? It wasn't in the city of Jerusalem. You fail to recognize the symbolism in Revelation. Babylon, the mother of harlots, is the spiritual opposite of the new heavenly Jerusalem, the mother of all believers (Galatians 4:26). Jerusalem never has and never will reign over the kings of the earth (Rev 17:21) or be the hold of every foul spirit (Rev 18:2). Babylon is a global entity.
You deny the fact that the crucifixion started and took place in Jerusalem, Jesus being whipped and his death march with the wooden cross walking through the street of Jerusalem was part of his crucifixion, you deny this "Sad"
The time Pilate washed his hands in Jerusalem to the time Jesus took his last breath on the cross of Calvary outside the old city was (The Crucifixion)
I never denied the fact that Jesus died on the cross of Calvary outside the gates of the old city
Please explain "The Great City" seen below, where, who, what, is this city?
Revelation 11:8KJV
You deny the fact that the crucifixion started and took place in Jerusalem,
The crucifixion itself refers to Jesus being killed on the cross. Yes, he was beaten before that in Jerusalem, but that is not where He was crucified. Scripture says that He was crucified near, but outside of Jerusalem (Hebrews 13:12, John 19:20). That's a fact.
What Revelation 11:8 refers to is where He actually died. Where He was actually crucified. It doesn't say "where our Lord was beaten".
No need in beating a dead horse, you deny that the acts of Pilate, Jesus being beaten, his death March through the streets of Jerusalem that took place inside the walls of Jerusalem, was part of the Lord's crucifixion, I believe that the afore mentioned all were part of the Lord's crucifixion
