A peculiar subject...

Why do I find the bowels(intestines) interesting? My mother is not a believer. Instead she mocks my relationship with God calling it...peculiar. She says: God doesn't talk to a person, and if we say He does, then we need to go have our head checked.

Of course, I disagree. If God doesn't speak to us through His word...then maybe we should consider the state of our bowels(intestines). Recently, in a joking manner to lighten the mood, I told my mother, God hasn't answered my big question yet: why does our bowels make a sound? There is an answer:

Isaiah 63:14-15 KJV

[14] As a beast goeth down into the valley, the Spirit of the Lord caused him to rest: so didst thou lead thy people, to make thyself a glorious name. [15] Look down from heaven, and behold from the habitation of thy holiness and of thy glory: where is thy zeal and thy strength, the sounding of thy bowels and of thy mercies toward me? are they restrained?

It is common knowledge within the medical community now that the bowels(intestines) play a key role in our immunity. If our bowels are poor and sluggish; our immunity is low and diseases are likely. What does God have to say on the subject?

The bad news:

Numbers 5:22-23 KJV

[22] And this water that causeth the curse shall go into thy bowels, to make thy belly to swell, and thy thigh to rot: And the woman shall say, Amen, amen. [23] And the priest shall write these curses in a book, and he shall blot them out with the bitter water:

2 Chronicles 21:14-15 KJV

[14] Behold, with a great plague will the Lord smite thy people, and thy children, and thy wives, and all thy goods: [15] And thou shalt have great sickness by disease of thy bowels, until thy bowels fall out by reason of the sickness day by day.

2 Chronicles 21:18-19 KJV

[18] And after all this the Lord smote him in his bowels with an incurable disease. [19] And it came to pass, that in process of time, after the end of two years, his bowels fell out by reason of his sickness: so he died of sore diseases. And his people made no burning for him, like the burning of his fathers.

Job 30:27 KJV

[27] My bowels boiled, and rested not: the days of affliction prevented me.

Lamentations 1:20 KJV

[20] Behold, O Lord ; for I am in distress: my bowels are troubled; mine heart is turned within me; for I have grievously rebelled: abroad the sword bereaveth, at home there is as death.

Job 20:14-15 KJV

[14] Yet his meat in his bowels is turned, it is the gall of asps within him. [15] He hath swallowed down riches, and he shall vomit them up again: God shall cast them out of his belly.

The good news:

Psalm 22:14-16 KJV

[14] I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels. [15] My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death. [16] For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet.

Genesis 15:3-4 KJV

[3] And Abram said, Behold, to me thou hast given no seed: and, lo, one born in my house is mine heir. [4] And, behold, the word of the Lord came unto him, saying, This shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir.

2 Samuel 7:12-13 KJV

[12] And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom. [13] He shall build an house for my name, and I will stablish the throne of his kingdom for ever.

Song of Songs 5:4 KJV

[4] My beloved put in his hand by the hole of the door , and my bowels were moved for him.

Isaiah 48:19 KJV

[19] Thy seed also had been as the sand, and the offspring of thy bowels like the gravel thereof; his name should not have been cut off nor destroyed from before me.

Philippians 2:1-2 KJV

[1] If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies, [2] Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.

Philemon 1:20 KJV

[20] Yea, brother, let me have joy of thee in the Lord: refresh my bowels in the Lord.

1 John 3:17 KJV

[17] But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?

Do we need any more proof that healing comes by shed love and mercy?

I love the peculiar things of God!

Philippians 1:7-8 KJV
[7] Even as it is meet for me to think this of you all, because I have you in my heart; inasmuch as both in my bonds, and in the defence and confirmation of the gospel, ye all are partakers of my grace. [8] For God is my record, how greatly I long after you all in the bowels of Jesus Christ.

don't sweat it, your mother knows what you were before the Lord came to you, she will see years down the road if its true or not. she may never be convinced the Lord speaks to His People, but she will be convince that the Lord is with you eventually.

Bowels was a word that was used to show the deepest part of oneself, the love part, as seen in the bowels of compassion.

1 John 3:17, But whoever has this world's good, and sees his brother have need, and shuts up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwells the love of God in him?

Judas had no revelation of the life and of the love Jesus had and in guilt, he hung himself and his bowels gushed out.

Acts 1:18, (Now this man acquired a field with the reward of his wickedness, and falling headlong he burst open in the middle and all his bowels gushed out.

Thank you for the encouragement. I don't think my mother has years. She struggles to make it a week. It makes me think of the verse that says (I am paraphrasing) we call evil good, and good evil. A guy we know has had cancer four times, he goes into remission and then comes out of remission. He openly denies the Lord, yet the guy receives opportunity after opportunity. Yet a Christian gets cancer and then passes without being given remission. This seems unfair, but then it hit me one day...the Believer is going home. The unbeliever needs more opportunity and God is long suffering and patient. I am convinced the only reason my mother is still here is to be given opportunity to see.
