Knife crime has risen by 21 percent across England and Wales to a six-year high, with almost 37,000 offences recorded by police in the 12 months to September.
The statistic was revealed on the same day the number of police officers hit a record low, with the Police Federation accusing the Conservatives of "losing control in the fight against crime".
Forces have been announcing swingeing cut-backs as the government continues to refuse blanket funding increases, seeing the Metropolitan Police close many police stations and merge its 32 policing boroughs into 12 command units to save L325m.
Stop and search is being increased and laws have been introduced aiming to crack down on knife possession but police have been appealing for help to tackle the "underlying issues" driving the deadly trend.
This week the Home Office launched an advertising campaign calling on young people to go "knife free" with videos launched across Snapchat, Twitter, Spotify and other online platforms

Trucks, vans and cars are used to run into people and kill them...so they too can be used as a weapon.

Oh I know. Twice here yobs attacked farms....the defending owners went to jail, not the attackers. The farmer had a gun to defend himself and shot it to stop his vehicle being stolen etc ...., yet it was the farmer with the gun who went to jail. The others got off . Crazy, crazy world. Stupid or crocked judges.

They seek and find relevance and self estime in gangs, which also supply wealth, girls and purpose.

What can be done to counter this?

It is not politically correct, but a large part of the answer is to stress/teach the importance of men in society, in the family and to make men accountable/responcible for their actions.

The downside of this is that it places women in a subordant role.

the sons of law abiding working class citizens of 50-70's are now disenfranchised by their own countrymen. they have no say even in their own household, or over their own children. men of households are portrayed as fools and stupid by media and tv shows. what self respecting man wants to be like that?

so gangs are where its ok and encouraged to be a man of self esteem. human nature is to be like pigs or like dogs, and dog packs are the way most men operate.

men live the life of the flesh, that animals had before man was made, (dust to dust ashes to ashes) they don't need taught to be what they are. if you notice researchers keep finding the nature of animals (or behavior) doing everything men do, and visa versa, everything. so human nature isn't unique under the sun. pigs will cannibalize, and men have in their history, so on and so forth.

Smiles, your trying to save the knives for protection in the light of current crime.

Americans say the same about gun ownership.

Knives or guns don't kill, people who direct the instruments kill.

Perhaps we need to ban violence in the cinema and media as a starter.

Then homosexuality and same sex marriage to follow.
