How can you say it was not teaching scripture if you dont remember what was said? Mass is almost entirely scripture. Perhaps you should come and hear?

Peace!
Hi PJ,
You see where I live....I've gone to Mass a lot.

I understand what @Nancy means. There's a lot of scripture at Mass.
Old Testament reading
Epistle reading
Gospel reading

But then the readings are never explained! I've spoken to the priests I know about this and they tell me it's not a classroom - it's a Mass.

Fr. Packwa on EWTN does a Mass and he always uses the opportunity to teach -- so I know this can be done. It's just that some priests are not willing to put the work in, or they feel it's not necessary; I don't know.

I DO wish there was more teaching at Mass. Many catholics are not knowledgeable about their faith.

I know GG-I wish that too...I am in an area where we also are surrounded by Catholic churches, they'e are also bars on, like every corner!!!! Where I live, they are predominantly Irish. I am Italian and Irish, and of course grew up Catholic. There is nothing at all that ever called me back to the CC.
Our sermons are chock full of scripture, and our pastor knows his bible like the back of his hand. Our bulletins on Sunday have all of the scriptures he will use for the sermon, the worship songs...and fill in the blank questions with a lined paper for notes.
And that is why I remember nothing from CC...very boring and God is ANYTHING BUT boring. Not only that, but IMO, we should never believe every word a Pastor say's is coming from that living, breathing Word of God-need to study them ourselves, "to show ourselves approved"...if you don't, you have put your faith in men and traditions. Sry folks, but the CC is the Last place I would EVER go back to, not having anything at all to do with the congregation, it's Pharisaical attitude that permeates the hierarchy and the huge lack of teaching!. Please no infighting here-gets nobody anywhere and does NOT glorify God. And...will change no-body's mind on this one, anyhow...IMO.
Grace and Peace!!

"My grandma, herself born in 1905, was 48 when I was born and she was never, ever a “normal” grandma, like my friends’. She spoke as fast as Sr. Charlotte and she was constantly terrified. She had been thoroughly and systematically brainwashed to the point where she could NOT stay away from the Catholic church, was going to mass every morning a 6:00 am (lest she and all of us would perish in hell), had no common sense, needed her rosary to function and would pray to specific saints for every situation she encountered. St Anthony of Padua when she had misplaced something, St Christopher when she was to travel, St Luke when she needed a doctor and the list goes on. She was very, very marginally intelligent, and very robotic in her life, always startled, always fearful and at times very mean." https://www.exopermaculture.com/201...tered-life-of-carmelite-nun-sister-charlotte/

If you insert my Aunt Mary in the place of "grandma" in the above post----> to a TEE! Wow..She wanted to be a nun but, she ended up marrying. Very very strange family. She is long dead now but I was like - Whoa!! The above is totally her! I talked to her eldest son recently on FB...have not seen him since very young children, and even then maybe once or twice. He always hated his mother. She was very mean to them...he loved his dad, it was a very sad place and I was glad my parents did not take us there hardly at all. She did the nervous like, every morning mass thing, like she had a craziness, a paranoia...dunno.
I believe the testimony of this Sister Charlotte, do I have reason or proof to show that? No. Just in how she speaks, the urgency...want's to make sure she touches on everything she can...again, dunno.
Going to a church in the 90's-one of the women I met there and became friends, of sorts. She WAS a cloistered nun right near me in Orchard Park Ny. She did not talk about it much...years after I met her, she ended up killing her cat and had a huge breakdown. She herself told me years after the fact...although I already knew from another mutual friend...coincidence? Dunno! But-God does ♥

Interesting.
Sounds like FEAR of the Lord was the implanted stronghold.

I certainly think FEAR of the Lord is a beginning, as Scripture Says.

But I do not believe IT is designed to be A LIFE-LONG effect.

We do things in Life, for one of two reasons...
FEAR
Or
DESIRE.

There is no DESIRE for a man to KNOW the Lord, if He has never heard of Him.

As a beginning of Learing About Him, we also learn TO Fear. And the FEAR is not unlike natural everyday FEAR, to be afraid of someone more powerful than you, or more equipped and knowledgeable than you.

It is as man progresses to know the Lord, accept His offering to become Converted, that such man's FEAR loosens and a FRIEND emerges, and the receiving of Power and Knowledge and Understanding.

Seems the family members you speak of held on to the fear and never got to the FRIENDSHIP relationship part.

Not so long ago, Friends I have spoken to that were raised Catholic, Catholic School, speak of the constant Fear Drilling being taught, and hated it. Sadly, they now reject all Scriptural teaching and have no desire to seek the Word for themselves. Pretty much have conceded, there is a heaven and Hell and they are Hell bound.

God Bless,
Taken

Do you know Mary as your Lord and Savior?

Hahaha-riiiiight!
I know her as blessed among women, a woman who herself needed a savior. A human being who was a special vessel used for Gods purposes...she believed God and obeyed Him. Just like many other human beings in the bible were used in many ways.

This is exactly where my Aunt Mary's children are at now, they want to hear NOTHING about God or Jesus...except for her daughter, named Mary also-she is like her mother according to my cousin. So screwed up and sad.
As far as fear, they never moved through the human definition of fear...I fear the Lord of course..."beginning of all knowledge" Lol...finished the latter half for you :D ---but not in that way at all anymore, it is more of a reverent fear, an awe.

Yes - fear is the beginning.
It is those in fear, Gods mercy prevails.
Luke 1:50

It is faith that relinquishes the fear.

Also pslams, prayers, antiphons, hymns all of which are scrpture or scripture based.
But then the readings are never explained! I've spoken to the priests I know about this and they tell me it's not a classroom - it's a Mass.

Indeed, its not a clssroom, but seldom have I heard a homily that was not about the readings just presented.

Many catholics are not knowledgeable about their faith.

This may be true, but that is usually their own fault.

Further, I would add that the Gospel itself is quite simple, as easily grasped by illiterate and simple folk, as by the learned and the wise... And it is the Gospel that is presented and lived at every Mass..

Peace!

When priests write their homilies, they have to dummie it down to a grade 8 level, within 7-12 minutes. Catechesis (instruction) occurs in the school on a daily basis, it's called "Religion Classes". Priests teach scripture, but they are not bound to that. Most of the time they try to make the scriptures relevant to today's world. "Scripture not being taught" is a attempt to justify not being there."I Have a Dream" by Baptist Martin Luther King is, IMO, an inspired speech, and it does't have a word of Scripture.
Digging at the historic Church the way some of you do just shows you never fell in love with her.

I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning
of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal."
I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves
and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table
of brotherhood.
I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with
the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed
into an oasis of freedom and justice.
I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they
will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.
I have a dream today!
I have a dream that one day, down in Alabama, with its vicious racists, with its
governor having his lips dripping with the words of "interposition" and "nullification"
-- one day right there in Alabama little black boys and black girls will be able to
join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers.
I have a dream today!

Not a word of scripture. It's OK for Rev. King but not ok if a priest doesn't "teach scripture" to your satisfaction.

Church and schools are not the primary educators. Parents are. Faith and morals are, ideally, assimilated from the parents example, not indoctrinated at Sunday school.

No it's not okay for Reverend King.
That was a worldly speech, no evangelism at all.
Very great speech for the world, but it does nothing to promote the Gospel of Jesus Christ unless someone breaks it down in a Sunday school class.
So what kind of a reverend was he?
A good man, yes, but a reverend?

Any dream that comes from God promotes God and our salvation.
