Just thinking here as I am listening to old Christian songs that will never get old for me :) There are the old hymns such as How Great Thou Art, Amazing Grace, Come Thou Fount etc. My church play these and more. They play contemporary music as well. And, I am finding I am really liking a lot of these songs. They are done skillfully and reverently.
Now, back in the 1990's, I did not care at all for the contemporary songs. It was 1992 that I first heard anything other than the hymns and the contemporary music I didn't like...loved the hymns, not the other new stuff though. It was just before I became a child of God when a friend of a friend introduced me to what was then called Jesus Music. I cannot, even to this day say that they EVER get old. They are just as much "keepers" as the older hymns are.

I see the 1960's-70's as a good and evil battle for souls. OTOH, you have the homeless, drunk, crime ridden, violent drugged up and psychedelic music folks would "drop" acid and do other mind altering drugs.
Then, you have what was called The Jesus Movement, now, this is hardly ever spoken about. If one were to give it an honest look see...not a scan only but an honest effort to really look at the "Hippy Movement" then you need to look at all aspects. I do not have numbers in front of me but I sure do have videos of droves and droves, thousands of the lost, filthy, drunken, homeless "hippies" coming to Jesus Christ our King...So, it seems to me that era was total spiritual warfare and everybody who looked like a hippie, must do all those horrible things. Check out Keith Green. I know probably nobody will and that is okay. They were just lost people getting saved by the many thousands and thousands by other Holy Spirit filled people who had allot of the same fashion within that culture.
Yeah-I think God won that battle, not the lawless...however they looked or dressed. So, does anybody else kind of see the spiritual battle that went on back then? satan did not like that Jesus Movement one bit.

He made a failed bid for the 1976 Democratic nomination for President.
After, he said, in reference to candidate Jimmy Carter, "we need a born-again, soul-winning witness in the White House".

Most definitely! But it has increased even more so with liberal and conservative believers coming at each other and in a violent way! I have never seen people violently attack peaceful protesters like they do today. But for those who refuse to see labels in others they are touching lives and ministering the truth and it is spreading. Paul taught and said by the word of our testimony was the gospel preached and many came to believe....our testimony speaks volumes because it is a personal real life account of God working in someones life.

OH! you think I am an old dirty Hippie DO YA! Please I am only joking, But there were many people back then that realized the Hypocrisy of the church, I my self had no clue, the first time in my life that I gave God any credit I cursed Him. That's another story! Anyway search out Cat Stevens, he basically sang about the faith, with remorse and then turned to Islam, which was on the up rise, during that time eastern religion's were becoming kinda dis-arable, they called them Gewroos!!!!!!!! can't spell!

"But for those who refuse to see labels in others they are touching lives and ministering the truth and it is spreading." <---Bingo. There are folks at this local community center that I volunteer at, and boy let me tell you---there are MANY people coming throught there that at one time, I would just cross the street to avoid. I had my own preconceived notions about that person. That was judging and each time we put all people into one little box and slap our own self righteous label on them. Oh how He works! And, oh how He humbles us! ouch.

Back in the 90's music like Carman and others were popular.
Here's a song that got me excited about Jesus and it still does today.

"Haight and Asburry" Whoa= you WERE right in the heart of both those movements! Oh yeah, Eastern Mysticism, drugs on and on...to me, they were searching...I wonder how many of them had the hunger in them (like Keith Green) to continue their search for the True God...Kieth knew it immediately and, he was into all of the Hippy scene as well before finding the Truth...then...he went on with his soon to be wife, to start a misnistry called Last Days Ministry, it is run by his wife Melody and their 2 remaining daughters. He died in 1982 in a plane crash with 2 of his small children and a family of 7---not even the pilot survived. Very touching story.

I wish you were right but it never happen much around my way.
Boston Mass.
1969 and onward
Had one friend who joined a group and moved with them to chicago less then 3-4 years later he was back on the streets doing angel dust and whatever.
No one else.
I guess they went into the nice neighborhoods where people didn't look so threatening.
All I see in the 60's was the onslaught of drugs, women's lib, and taking prayer out of the school.
When I got out of the army in the 70's, drugs were everywhere and nobody I knew ever went to church
the law of the land became legalized abortion which pleased the women's libbers very much
I couldn't get a job because they were all being given to women, all those government jobs that were always given to men coming home from a war now were given to pretty girls right out of high school.
So much for serving my country.
I never felt too bad about it because I saw so many guys from the war that were worse off than me.
I could go on but I might get bitter.
But I can tell you, I never met anyone out in the streets that told me about getting saved.

I guess that does not surprise me as the movement that spilled over into the 70's all started on the West Coast. Then again, if only "few" will heed His call...there were less rather than more being saved. I would NEVER want to see a bitter ROLLO...although I can only imagine what you went through. And, the reception home for a slew of you brave guys, was horrid...I still try to wrap my mind around the disdain many of you were received with after coming home from Hell! Thank you Rollo!

Sad! I crawled out in 1983, I have met a few that had encounters with the Lord, and like myself He freed us from our Captivity! Give God Glory for the Thousands + that have been set free!

Neither she nor I were ever hippies, but my wife was born in San Francisco. She never left the state of California until after we were married with one child. I had been most of the way around the world before I ever met her.

I am mostly for those old Christian songs you mention here myself. Most of the other ones mentioned I have never even heard of much less heard. I am not against a lot of these others. They simply mean nothing to me.

No, he certainly didn't. And I know literally scores of absolutely fantastic men and women of God who were saved in that movement.
