Id like to start a discussion on this, but am unsure how to, so will just type. :D On one hand I think that it is good to discuss spirits and demons to realize as Christians, we have no reason to fear them. We can rebuke them in Jesus name. But on the other hand, sometimes it seems like some people have a lot more demonic influence then others. And spirits like depression/anxiety etc...a lot have these. And I do believe they are like spirits. What is y'alls take on this. I know @Heart2Soul shared something really good about it. Can I share that Patty?

But when I was younger I have gone through "depossessions" not to be confused by exorcisms. I really don't know how to describe that or want to talk about it again. Does talking about demons/spirits open a door to demonic influence? I rebuke that from happening in Jesus Name and bind any attempts by the enemy.

I don't think it's a good idea to discuss them too much because then our mind and hearts meditation becomes focused on them instead of glorifying and worshipping God.

Yeh it is why I never got into demonology or anything.

Since God has revealed to us how evil spirits, demons, and Satan operate against human beings -- particularly children of God -- we need to have a clear. biblical understanding of the spiritual warfare which God allows on this earth. At the same time, we need to be careful that we do not devote too much time or attention to these enemies of God and man.

1. Evil spirits are fallen angels, and when Lucifer became Satan(Heb ha Satan = the Adversary),(also called the Devil) and committed treason against God, he took a large contingent of all the angels with him when he was cast out of God's Heaven. Some of these evil angels came down to earth, took the form of humans, and cohabited with women in order to produce unusual offspring -- giants (Nephilim) and men of renown ("gods and heroes").

This was before the Flood, and because they thorougly corrupted humanity, and brought judgment upon the earth, they were imprisoned and chained in the darkness of Tartarus (called "hell) and remain there until their final judgment. They are called "the angels which kept not their first estate" or "the angels that sinned". At the same time God created Hell (Gehenna, the Lake of Fire) for the Devil and his angels, and that is where they will remain for eternity.

2. Since their fall, the remaining evil spirits were allowed to inhabit the atmospheric heavens ("the air"),(possibly even outer space), and Satan is called "the prince of the power of the air", being their leader (also called Beelzebub). At the same time Satan is "the god of this world", and when he came to tempt Christ, he offered Him all the kingdoms of the world and the glory of them. Which means that all worldly systems, ideas, and philosophies ultimately originate with the Devil.

3. That word "power" denotes that these angels (just like the holy angels) have supernatural powers, and they are far more powerful than human beings. Also, there are hierarchies within the angelic realm, denoted by the terms thrones, dominions, principalities, powers, ruler of of the darkness of this world, and spiritual wickedness in high places. Therefore these evil angels are assigned to the nations and kingdoms of the world, and actually control them. We see this illustrated in the book of Daniel.

4. Demons are evil spirits which possess humans or animals. They are also the elemental spirits which are worshiped by animists, and they are also the pagan false gods worshiped by all the false religions. Some claim that demons are the offspring of humans and evil angels, but that is not revealed in Scripture.

5. The spirits which are termed "ghosts" are indeed evil spirits or demons pretending to be the spirits of those who died. When mediums summon spirits "from the dead" those are not the spirits of the departed dead (which cannot leave Hades), but evil spirits masquerading as people.

6. Those who have been born-again have received the gift of the
indwelling Holy Spirit, and "greater is He that is in you, than he [Satan] that is in the world" (1 John 4:4). Which means that believers cannot be possessed by evil spirits. However they can be oppressed and attacked by Satan and his evil spirits, as we see in the book of Job.

7. God has given His children the power to cast out demons from those who are demon-possessed, but unless these afflicted people are genuinely regenerated, they can be re-possessed, as we know from Scripture. At the same time, all Christians are exhorted to resist the Devil, and he will flee from us.

8. Some people teach that Christians should rebuke the Devil, but what we find is that even Michael the archangel would not rebuke the Devil, but said "the Lord rebuke thee". So it is God who must rebuke Satan.

ZECHARIAH 3
1 And he shewed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD, and Satan standing at his right hand to resist him.
2 And the LORD said unto Satan, The LORD rebuke thee, O Satan; even the LORD that hath chosen Jerusalem rebuke thee: is not this a brand plucked out of the fire?
3 Now Joshua was clothed with filthy garments, and stood before the angel.
4 And he answered and spake unto those that stood before him, saying, Take away the filthy garments from him. And unto him he said, Behold, I have caused thine iniquity to pass from thee, and I will clothe thee with change of raiment.

Any scripture addresses about angels occupying atmospheric heavens?

When mediums summon spirits "from the dead" those are not the spirits of the departed dead (which cannot leave Hades), but evil spirits masquerading as people. I thought I saw my grandmother in a white robe a long time ago. She had been dead for about ten years and I was waking up. She looked very happy.

This is how I view it. Which makes me wonder what that was back then. It was a year after I had got saved. And then there was something at Teen Challenge that was similar, but I am just unsure if demon was just using me as a puppet or it was anxiety or what. But I am secure in my salvation. I ha e had a lot of oppression in the past.

7. God has given His children the power to cast out demons from those who are demon-possessed, but unless these afflicted people are genuinely regenerated, they can be re-possessed, as we know from Scripture. 4 And he answered and spake unto those that stood before him, saying, Take away the filthy garments from him. And unto him he said, Behold, I have caused thine iniquity to pass from thee, and I will clothe thee with change of raiment.

Now that last one was absolutely new information to me. But it makes complete sense. I believe that as God's children we have more authority then angels do to rebuke them, but I'd much rather God rebuke them. After I had a dream with spiritual warfare in it, I have asked the Holy Spirit to speak for me if the enemy tried to do that again. My dreams have been quiet. I pray that every night. I think that is SO helpful with spiritual warfare. God definitely will protect us and speak for us if we ask Him too. I commented in bold.

Are there scriptures that talk about this? Angels cohabitating with humans?
Yes.

GENESIS 6
1 And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them,
2 That the sons of God [ANGELS] saw the daughters of men [WOMEN] that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.
3 And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.
4 There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto [COHABITED WITH] the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.
5 And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
Any scripture addresses about angels occupying atmospheric heavens?
Yes. Here is what it says in Eph 6:12:

King James Bible
For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. [the heavenlies]

Strong's Concordance
epouranios: of heaven
Original Word: ἐπουράνιος, ον
Part of Speech: Adjective
Transliteration: epouranios
Phonetic Spelling: (ep-oo-ran'-ee-os)
Short Definition: heavenly, celestial
Definition: heavenly, celestial, in the heavenly sphere, the sphere of spiritual activities; met: divine, spiritual.

Greek to me. Lol But that is a fresh view of Ephesians 6:12 that makes sense to me. I never did a word study on high places.

But the sons of God, I will definitely have to check out, because I have never heard the sons of God as angels before except with Shedrach, meshach, and abednago in some translations...much less cohabitating with women. I'm unsure about that. Never heard this before.

Here are the comments from Gaebeleins commentary which corresponds to what I have indicated:

'3. The result of the marriage of the sons of God with the daughters of men were children, who were heroes, men of the Name. If the sons of God were simply the pious Sethites, who mixed with the Cainites, it is hard to understand why the offspring should be a special race, heroes, men of the Name. The giants were Nephilim, which means “the fallen ones.”

“Sons of God” is the term applied in the Old Testament to supernatural beings, both good and evil. Angels good and fallen are termed sons of God in the Old Testament. Satan himself is reckoned among the sons of God in Job 1:6; Job 2:1. The term sons of God must mean here supernatural evil beings. These evil beings came down out of the air and began to take possession of such of the daughters of men as they chose.

“For if God spared not the angels which sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them unto chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment; and spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly” (2Peter 2:4-5).

Here we have a New Testament hint on Genesis 6:1-5. The Scripture declares that the fallen angels are still loose; here, however, are angels, which sinned and God did not spare them. Another passage in Jude’s Epistle is still more significant: “And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, He hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.” This statement in Jude is linked with the sin of Sodom and Gomorrah.

We stand not alone in this exposition. “The sons of God, in my judgment, mean the same beings in Genesis as they do in Job. This point will suffice to indicate their chief guilt in thus traversing the boundaries which God appointed for His creatures. No wonder that total ruin speedily ensues. It is really the basis of fact for not a few tales of mythology which men have made up.” (W. Kelly, Lectures on the Pentateuch.) God has veiled the awful corruption and we dare not intrude into the secret things...'

i think it basically follows the "you can't cheat an honest man" scenario tbh; iow satan is powerless over you unless you are drawn to some sin or can be tempted. If you can't be tempted, or rather when you can no longer be tempted, satan actually becomes a sort of ally, as strange as that sounds, i guess 'servant' is a better term there.

I guess you mean ally as on strengthening our resolve and testimony. Like a Bahaha, can't tempt me?

i was thinking more in realizing others' areas of temptations maybe, one might remove or even include a perceived temptation for someone else for some reason, or see something along those lines coming and do nothing even, maybe to see how it will be handled, or do the reverse to remove a temptation, all depends. Stuff one might do with their kids too i guess

Hey, @Mayflower!.....well I am wide awake this morning...woohoo! Just wanted to give you a reply here on this subject....The Bible speaks a great deal about the evil spirits, demons, the enemy, the adversary etc. etc....and we have been given scripture regarding how we defeat the attacks of the evil in our lives.....i.e. resist the devil and he will flee, put on the full armor that you may stand firm against the wiles of the devil....and more but just making a point that we should be wise concerning the ways of the enemy and how he is out to kill, steal, and destroy God's people. A great deal of Revelation talks about the demise of satan and his demons...…...if you think about it without satan and his demons we wouldn't have the trials, tribulations, and temptations of sin that so easily besets many Christians.
Satan does have power and will perform miracles that deceive many into believing he is Jesus.....if it were possible even the highest elect will be deceived.
But the one thing to remember is that Jesus took away the keys of hell and death and has given us life.....He set the captives free, those who are oppressed of the enemy, healed the sick and cleansed us of our iniquities. Greater is He who is in us than he who is in the world....where we are weak He is strong....
One of the gifts of the Holy Spirit is spiritual discernment so that we can know what spirit is operating through someone...so it is an excellent gift to have.....
We can be assured that our victory against the enemy is promised in scripture....the battle belongs to the Lord.

This was @Heart2Soul post, what she posted.

There are tons of studies and research about mental and emotional disorders and many of them relate it to childhood or genetic causes.

The Bible also addresses these very same issues and instructs us how to be free from them.

So mankind (doctors) call them "disorders"
The Bible calls them "demons"

Doctors medicate the problem and offer little hope of ever becoming cured...

The Bible says that Jesus came to set us free from bondage and oppression and promises freedom from these things.
Luke 4:18 King James Version (KJV)
18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,

Doctors say that this is a psychological issue.
The Bible says this is a spiritual issue.....

Ephesians 6:10-12 King James Version (KJV)
10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.

11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

So here is what you need to determine in your heart.....will you consider to realize your mental health is being attacked by a demonic spirit who is trying to destroy you and keep you from coming to the knowledge of truth and gaining understanding in how to destroy him and cast him out of your body?

Here is a link that explains demonic spirits and how they operate....and I put an excerpt of that article in this post relating to you. If you care to study it further.

Different Kinds of Demonic Spirits
The Different Kinds of Demonic Spirits
By: Michael Bradley

"To those of you who would like to learn more about the deliverance ministry, we are going to use this article to give you more specifics on the different kinds of demonic spirits that are out there.

This article will attempt to take you into the heart of the different kinds of strategies that demons will use against people.

For the most part, demons are known by their “function names.” The function name will tell you what the demon specializes in once he becomes attached to a person, whether it be on the outside of the person or on the inside of the person.

For instance, a spirit of lust will specialize in transmitting lust onto the person they are attached to. Once they transmit that feeling of lust onto this person, they will then try and get the person to act out on it. This is how many people end up engaging in fornication, adultery, or pornography. This is what you call a person coming under “direct demonic influence.”

5. Mental Health
The Bible tells us that God has given us a spirit of power, love, and a “sound mind.” And what do you think demons will want to try and do just off this one verse alone – to try and give all of us an unsound mind. In other words, they will try to make us mentally unstable as much as they can.

Here is the verse from our Bible giving us this very powerful revelation about God wanting to give all of us a very sound mind in Him:

“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” (2 Timothy 1:7)

This, without question, is one of the favorite games that demons will try and play with all of us. If they can make us mentally unstable to any significant degree, they will then be able to do significant damage to our abilities to our operate in our callings for the Lord, if not completely knock us right out of our calls.

Here are some of the function names of the demons who will operate in this realm:

  • Fear
  • Depression
  • Torment
  • Dread
  • Hopelessness
  • Despair
  • Insecurity
  • Paranoia
  • Suspicion
  • Distrust
  • Insecurity
  • Loneliness
  • Shyness
  • Discouragement
  • Passivity
  • Lying
  • Deceit
  • Antisocial
  • Compulsive neurotic behavior
  • Phobias
  • Madness
  • Insanity
  • Schizophrenia
  • Multiple Personalities
  • Hearing Voices
  • Mind Control
We all battle some of these types of faults and imperfections from time to time. Not everyone who has fear, shyness, or loneliness on them is under any kind of demonic attack. But where you can get into problems with some of these types of conditions is when demons do move in and try to intensify what you may already be going through."

This is a good list. Although I am not convinced apparitions are always demons.

Regarding the nephalim, there are little known humanoid skeletons that have been found which many believe to be the nephalim. These defy explanation by the prevailing evolutionary theory.

I also believe demons are responsible for genetic degradation within the world and are responsible for new bacteria and viruses "evolving." Cancers and genetic diseases are also their doing.

Here are some of the function names of the demons who will operate in this realm:
I don't believe it is wise or necessary to call everything "demons". In fact, it could be positively harmful to mislabel something.

So the list should be divided into (1) the possible result of demonic oppression and (2) the possible result of demon-possession.

1. The possible result of demonic oppression
Fear
Depression
Torment
Dread
Hopelessness
Despair
Insecurity
Paranoia
Suspicion
Distrust
Insecurity
Loneliness
Shyness
Discouragement
Passivity
Lying (Deceit)
Antisocial
Compulsive neurotic behavior
Phobias

2. The possible result of demon-possession
Madness
Insanity
Schizophrenia
Multiple Personalities
Hearing Voices
Mind Control

I like this labeling better, though I think it means the same thing.

The list is simply functions of demons in the area of mental health not about demonic possession....but I do like the different lists...something to think about.
