In the Gospel of John, after Jesus was raised to life, he twice entered their meeting place when the doors were locked (John 20:21 and 26 ) stood amoung them and said 'Peace be with you!'
Why do you think these were the first words he said?
“Why do you think these were the first words he said?” Maybe: If any man's wife go aside, and commit a trespass against him, (Numbers 5:12) A husband could hold his peace and she would have to bear her iniquity. But if her husband did not withhold his peace...then
he would bear her iniquity. Numbers 30:14-15 But if her husband altogether hold his peace at her from day to day; then he establisheth all her vows, or all her bonds, which are upon her: he
confirmeth them, because he
held his peace at her in the day that he heard them . [15]
But if he shall any ways make them
void after that he hath heard them ; then he shall
bear her iniquity.
Matthew 26:62-63
[62] And the high priest arose, and said unto him, Answerest thou nothing? what is it which these witness against thee? [63] But Jesus
held his peace. And the high priest answered and said unto him, I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us whether thou be the Christ, the Son of God.
Mark 14:61-62
[61] But he
held his peace, and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked him, and said unto him, Art thou the Christ, the Son of the Blessed? [62] And Jesus said, I am: and ye shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.
Jesus withheld peace and in return; confirmed the high priest asking iniquity would stand. But to His disciples He said “peace be unto you.” ... “it is finished.”
Or maybe it was just a common saying. I’ve always wondered since it seems we were given the same authority to speak peace, or to withhold it.(remit or retain)
John 20:23 Whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained.
