Could this be this a word problem in math?

Once, many years ago now, my pastor at the time said that we [speaking of the group of people or denomination to which he was a part] probably already knew probably better than 95% of all that people needed to know about God and the things of God. I would guess he got his percentage from the same place Jack Van Impe got his 25+%.

When I was in school they taught me how to calculate percentages, but in order to make the calculation we need at least two pieces of information, 1) the total available and 2) the part of it we had. How did my pastor and how did Jack Van Impe arrive at their percentages?

If anyone knows the correct answer, please share it with me.
