Metanoia is a journey of changing one's mind, heart, self, or way of life. In the bible it is translated as "repentance."

Metanoia means "after-thought."

But it is more than a one-time event or action. Repentance is a process of going from being carnal to being spiritual in Christ. We are to be renewed in our minds...transformed into a life that resembles Christ in every way.

So much of the Christian life is a process. People like to say they have arrived at salvation or conversion. But these are in fact just steps in a journey that take us to a full stature in Christ. A race isn't finished until the end....otherwise there is the certainty of disqualification. We will need perseverance to see the process through to completion.

No one knows what it takes to grow in Christ at the outset. No one knows the mind of Christ in the early stages of the Christian walk.

So then metanoia (repentance) is the change that must take place for us to appropriate the mind of Christ. It is a common error to declare the process complete long before a person has reached a constant walk in the Spirit'

We are to be as pilgrims in this world...being transformed in our way of thinking as well as in our lifestyle....after having received of the new divine nature.

So then ALL things are become new. And this renewal needs to not just have a beginning....with what God has given to us as a free gift. We need to move into His new life ...by grace through faith...until we are nothing but Him, so that it is no longer we....but Christ.

Until then we must continue in "metanoia"....repentance, or the journey that transforms our minds and ways and brings these to the very likeness of Christ.

hmm, don't think so wadr.
brb later
Not enough information has been provided in the Op to begin to start any meaningful discussion.

I think that he is referring to the Greek Root, G:3341 which is found in the NT 22 times embedded in 2 Greek words and where one of those words has a slight variations as well with the addition of a tic.

For those who want to dig a little deeper, the following link is a good place to start: - Strong's Greek: 3341. μετάνοια (metanoia) -- change of mind, repentance

The link above provides the 22 occurrences of this embedded root in the NT.

I don't want to come across as contrary, because what you say is true. However, I would like to address why it is true, and then add what is ultimately more true.

The "process" which can indeed take a lifetime, is only a process with those who see it as such...and therein lies the problem. We see our whole life filled with struggles and begin to believe that, "all things have [not] been made new." Which is a departure from faith in all that has been spoken and written. It is of course allowed...but that is because of His grace, not because God contradicts Himself saying both that the old man has died and the new is alive, that it is no longer we who lived but Christ who lives, that all things have been made new, that we were (past tense) crucified and raise up with Christ...to also say that we will have tribulation, that it is a race, etc..

Therefore, we should not all accept that it is a process and continue as crawling babes, but take all the time we need, knowing that God has also said that we "were" made new that very moment...even if it seems to drag on. And if we can receive it, that we should step into and walk in the light of Christ without delay, rather than tiptoeing slowly.

Thus, except for the grace of God, I would rather say: Run to Him!

If a person really has what we might call a death bed repentance, he has taken that first step on the journey you mention. If he really dies immediately, then for him considering the time available he has successfully completely his journey. On the other hand, if after repenting, he recovers he will have to continue walking [taking more steps] until the real end of his journey arrives. This brings to mind again this verse:

"But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more." Luke 12:48

How much time are we, each of us, given and what do we do with that time? The man who actually dies in that first death bed has less time than the man who recovers and lives on for several years. How many steps will God require of each of during the time that is available to each of us?

These are very good observations. I think it is vital that we never count ourselves prematurely as having arrived at the fulness of Christ according to our character. We can know the full power of Christ and the whole truth...but for these to become our own in wisdom, knowledge and understanding will take a very great humility and a sometimes painful realization that we have missed the truth at important times in our lives.

Peter was convinced that he had what it took to die with Jesus...but he had much to learn about the Lord and himself.

It means more than 'Oh, shucks...!' and then moving on.

It involves a turning from sin and a turning to God in faith.

A lot of religion is based on an idea of supposed repentance which falls short of forsaking the sin...

It involves a way of thinking...a change, even a drastic way of thinking different. I think that once a person has become religious and rigid in thinking...the metanoia process stops and the person gets stuck.

The purpose of this thread is to cause people (including myself) to reconsider the rigidity that we hold on to in our ways of thinking. Until we are truly living in the resurrection life of Jesus...we should be ready for a change if not a drastic change in our way of thinking and seeing things.

Sometimes we just need to ...think again.

We need to reconsider the meaning of these verses:

"When thou art bidden of any man to a wedding, sit not down in the highest room; lest a more honourable man than thou be bidden of him;
And he that bade thee and him come and say to thee, Give this man place; and thou begin with shame to take the lowest room.
But when thou art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that bade thee cometh, he may say unto thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have worship in the presence of them that sit at meat with thee.
For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted." Luke 14:9-11

Always, daily I say, take the very lowest place in lowest room. If we are to be lifted up, God will do it.

Acts 11:18 When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life.

Early Christianity was termed "the Way"...the way to eternal life. The way to God, who grants us this life.

There were 10 lepers that Jesus healed one day...but only one returned to give thanks and submit himself to Him. Jesus asked..."where are the other 9?"

If we wish to continue on the path to life then we must remain on the metanoia journey. Having begun in the Spirit we are also to be perfected by the Spirit. But this is accomplished through humility and teach-ability. Once we think we have gone far enough...we will stop progressing.

We need to go from glory to glory....from faith to faith...from one kind of life to another. The journey takes us from ourselves to Christ....so that it is no longer ourselves we are living through.

Metanoia is unto holiness.
Without holiness none shall see the Lord....in this age or the next.

Wholesome, humbling passage quoted...

Acts 26:20 But shewed first unto them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the coasts of Judaea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, and do works meet for repentance.

Is repentance a small temporary window into the pride of men whereby one allows, for a tiny moment, a true humility and change of heart and mind?

Or is metanoia an ongoing process of real change...a journey of transformation that produces the fruit of righteousness and holiness?

Following Christ implies movement. But what kind of movement?

It is a move towards transformation in our ways of being.

GINOLJC, this is true, because the apostle Paul said, "he had not yet attained", (Phil 3:12). but press toward the mark of the High calling in christ Jesus, (Phil 3:12).

Phil. 3:12 Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus.

That I may apprehend....meaning we are not instantly transformed into the image of Christ. We still need to run the race of faith towards the fulness of Christ.

13 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before,

All this talk of having been saved in the past...we must rather move into the salvation of God.

14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

That high calling is holiness...to walk as Jesus walked.

15 Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if in any thing ye be otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto you.

But only if one is ready to change.

...or even...insufficient. Who wants to hear that their efforts in this life towards godliness were insufficient?
