God knows how to fix us. When we go to Him broken...He doesn't just recover us to what we were before...but makes us into a whole new person. The law makes us broken....so that we will go to Him for His Jesus upgrade.

The difficulty is the cost. It costs us our old selves. It costs us our old way of operating. Like a computer upgrade whereby all the old programs are lost in order to upgrade the system.

God ups the ante by allowing us to walk on a whole new level....a level that is holy.

For me I’d like to substitute the word law with model and view it as He says I give you a new model.

Law is according to power. God gives us the power of a new life. Not just a model we can't hope to emulate. With God there is no ideals or ideology. God just does things.....impossible things. We need to go to God for HIS kind of fix.

Apparently The world was more attractive to him than God

It's like a man with an old computer but he is unwilling to upgrade and lose all his programs. Being rich in a fallen state seems better than being poor in an elevated state. He chose to be a big fish in a small pond rather than a small fish in a big pond. He chose to be a big star in a small movie rather than having a smaller role but in a bigger movie.

Couldn’t agree more.

So then we are saved because of law....God's law. The law of faith in God. The same God that gives us an impossible standard for our level of strength...empowers us to fulfill that law by a new and living way in Christ that DOES the impossible. Such is the glory of the gospel.

There’s no law against what you’ve stated

Amen! But there is a law...the law of faith...and of life in the Spirit... that keeps us in the presence of God.

Imagine that gravity is something bad...that keeps us from flying. But it is also something good....it keeps us from flying around aimlessly. So then law keeps us grounded. The law of God is to keep us grounded....in HIM.

The more we see of his selflessness, the more attractive that becomes.
This world diminishes.

Does grace replace the law? Not at all. Grace fulfills the law. And we who enter into Christ are there to show how that law works.

Rom. 8:4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

If we try to rid ourselves of the law because of grace it would be like asking for a glass of water but without the glass. Since we ourselves are the container...then we would be eliminating ourselves from the equation.

Which reminds me of a friend of mine who speaks only a little English. He was in Ontario (an Anglo province) and asked for a 7-up no glace (ice)... The guy stood there for awhile since he thought he heard no "glass"...until a co-worker who spoke some French said...he means "no ice."
In French "ice" is "glace"...

Anyway...if we eliminate the law we just become lawless and have no place for God's grace.

Who understands this passage?....

Gal. 2:19 For I through the law am dead to the law, that I might live unto God.

Through what law?

(Paul is quite confusing with all his references to law without being specific about what he's talking about)

And what does this have to do with....the soul that sins...it shall die. ???

The verse cited goes hand in hand with...

Romans 7:4 NASB
[4] Therefore, my brethren, you also were made to die to the Law through the body of Christ, so that you might be joined to another, to Him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit for God.

And in context of Rom 7, it is the moral law which had slayed us ...

Romans 7:5,7,11,13 NASB
[5] For while we were in the flesh, the sinful passions, which were aroused by the Law, were at work in the members of our body to bear fruit for death.
[7] What shall we say then? Is the Law sin? May it never be! On the contrary, I would not have come to know sin except through the Law; for I would not have known about coveting if the Law had not said, "You SHALL NOT COVET."
[11] for sin, taking an opportunity through the commandment, deceived me and through it killed me.
[13] Therefore did that which is good become a cause of death for me? May it never be! Rather it was sin, in order that it might be shown to be sin by effecting my death through that which is good, so that through the commandment sin would become utterly sinful.

If anyone says it means "the age of works-based salvation is now replaced with the age of grace-based salvation", THEY ARE DECEIVED BY A DOCTRINE OF DEVILS -- DON'T LISTEN TO THEM. From Adam to the last redeemed one, all will get to heaven by grace through faith in Christ - the OT folks by faith in the One to come and NT folks by faith in the One Who came.

So, what's the passage mean?

Satan's ultimate lie that man can be saved by works had corrupted every nation on Earth and by the time of Christ, Israel as well. Paul, too, was corrupted by it and, after the Lord set him straight, he went about setting the rest of us straight by preaching the law is powerless to save, but the saved by the power of Christ will obey the law.

The idea we can freely disregard the law because we now live in an age of grace is simply the other side of the same demonic coin that Satan himself struck in order to accomplish the eternal ruin of those who by the one side may choose to be saved by their own works or by the other side choose to be saved while willfully continuing in sin.

Excellent thread and topic...great to see the law being exalted in such a way that grace and mercy is harmonised and all put in perspective...none being isolated and all being interdependent.

Now all that needs to be done is encourage everyone that they need to obey that law. And explain how.
