Really? How does that work? You just pick out the parts you like?
Really? How does that work? You just pick out the parts you like?
Exodus 31:15
Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death.

The only stick you could ever find to hit the damn dogs with. But the beast knows his master's heart, says the Word of God.

And for your information, <<Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day>>, like picking up sticks to hit the dogs and stones to stone the harlot, <<he shall surely be put to death>>.

But you think God's judgements changed? You just pick out the parts you like? Find out now THAT GOD NEVER CHANGES. Find out now rather than too late, because Christ still takes the stripes meant for sinners. Find out now that God never changes, nor his judgement, his justice or his Law. Find out now rather than too late that God never changed or lessened the penalty, ever.

Do you hope to remind God of all this about Himself? He is going to remind you, instead, be warned.

I am not and have never said I am a self-taught theologian. I have been blessed to sit under the tutorship of many fine men, have read books written by many fine men, and have been given the ability to sort out the good from the bad by the Spirit of God as he said he would in scripture.

I can't help it if I am not a slave to catholic theology and prefer to give it a miss so that I do not have to give up all the good things that I have learnt and experienced.
YOU have been given the ability to sort out the good from the bad? Are you saying your tutors, who were “fine men”, lacked that ability?

You are right......I am a “slave to Catholic theology”. It has a 2,000 year history of many fine men coming up with that theology. YOU are a slave to YOUR theology. How long is the history of your theology? How long have you been studying Scripture?

Why is your theology better or more true than the men of The Churches theology?

And why is the Spirit sooooo confused? After all, your theology is MUCH different then a lot of highly regarded and respected “fine men”. Did the Spirit not talk to them but it did you???

Himself, yes we rest in Him, are you sure its just not Pride,Jesus never gave us the sabbath, neither did God, God gave the sabbath to the Israelites as,

Trying to squeeze into one line as many lies as words... it won't effect the Truth of the Word of God the Scriptures.

Jesus did give us his Sabbath if He is our Lord He being the Lord of the Sabbath.
And God made the Sabbath for no reason whatsoever than for man and
for the Day He saved his People
from Adam and Eve
to Moses and the children of Israel
to the Christians "HOLDING TO THE HEAD
THE BODY GROWING WITH THE GROWTH OF GOD
EATING AND DRINKING OF CHRIST
THE SUBSTANCE AND NOURISHMENT
OF SABBATH'S FEAST
MINISTERED." Colossians 2:16.

What's not to like? Delighting oneself in his Savior is a blessing is it not? Spending a day at full rest to delight in God and enjoy His company... What's not to like, love, about that? No distractions. No other cares. Just a true Sabbath rest. Wonderful,! Why be so critical of something you haven't tried?

Please do quote from the Catechism that Rome admits that.

Curious Mary

  • Q. What is the Third Commandment? ( Remember they renumbered! )
    A. The third Commandment is: Remember thour keep holy the Sabbath day.
    Q. Which is the Sabbath day?
    A. Saturday is the Sabbath day.

    Q. Why do we observe Sunday instead of Saturday?
    A. We observe Sunday instead of Saturday because the Catholic Church transferred the solemnity from Saturday to Sunday."

It's only one way it can be literally translated. Each word can have similar alternative meanings. "One" is "Mia" in Greek. Mia can also be translated to mean "first". "Sabbaton" is Greek for "Day of the week". It can be translated to "Sabbath", "Sabbath's" but also to mean, "the intraval between two Sabbath's": in other words "week".

Thus, "Mia sabbaton" actually can be translated properly to "first day of the week". It could be translated to "one of the sabbaths", as you pointed out, but it would be an improper translation.

Which is the proper translation? Context must be applied to figure it out. Paul is speaking of collecting money. He wants it done before he or his helper gets there so they won't have to gather before hand. The way you are translating it means they could pick one Sabbath... Any one of their choice... To do it. That would be totally inefficient and it's not setting aside "as they have prospered". Since they didn't know when Paul or his servant was coming, it makes more sense to set aside weekly.

In respect to this verse, you could make other points which are stronger. For example, he wasn't directly calling for them to worship on Sunday, only to set aside an offering. But as for the translation... "Upon the first day of the week" is the proper translation.
And I would suggest that the reason Paul stipulated the first day of the week was not because this day was suddenly a holy day to be observed ( as if collecting the offering made it holy) but because they still observed the 7th day Sabbath and didn't work. They observed the day according to their custom. Mundane day to day activities such as labour and money counting was left to the other days of the week. So rather than the collection being a support for observing Sunday as a sacred day, it actually accomplished the opposite. It further established the sanctity of the Sabbath.

The Catholic Church changed the numbering of the commandments to show that they are 'above the law'.

Yes, and I would tend to agree that is a strong possibility. We tend to forget that Paul himself was a Jew, and even a Pharisee, because he did preach we aren't under the Law. However, he did want to return to Jerusalem for the Passover celebration. We also tend to think the Corinthians were gentiles, and they probably were mostly gentiles, but not all of them. Prescilia and Aquila, for example. Paul was a self proclaimed Apostle to the gentiles, but in Greece alone he did preach to many Jews. We tend to forget that.

I read about a dozen Bible commentaries on this verse and many (if not all) tend to give support to your theory. Paul did say we are not under the Law, and I believe he even said Gentiles were not expected to follow holy days (perhaps even chastised them for doing so in Galatians). Yet, he himself did at times. This is not a criticism of the great Apostle, just an admittance that I don't understand all his actions. Though, I kind of do... He said we weren't bound by them, gentile or Jew.. But he never said we couldn't observe them.

I want to expound on something else which has not been talked about in this thread, but the commentaries I read have discussed. Paul called for a collection on Sunday. For both Corinth and Galatia. Again, he didn't make this a Church service day. But many of the commentaries wonder if the money was just set aside in the individual homes or gathered into one "Church account". The commentators suggest that the Christian Corinthians wouldn't have had such a banking system to do that. I totally disagree. I think they did, and I will expound on that if anyone is interested.

But in conclusion.... 1 Corinthians 16:2 does show Church activity, but it is not a president for it being a Christian holy day. Acts 20:7 is a better verse for that, but even that doesn't solidify Sunday as a holy day. It says they had a service on Sunday. That's it. It isn't a mandate.

I can give other verses that suggest it's a good day to hold services. God likes to be first. He likes first fruits. He says seek ye FIRST the Kingdom of God... Sunday is the first day of the week. It really does make sense! Nonetheless... You make some good points which I agree are worthy of consideration.

Except Sunday isn't the day God sanctified and made holy. Sabbath is a relational appointment. Not that we don't meet with God at any other time, but the Sabbath is special... Unique. A day God set aside specifically to spend with His people. And God doesn't change, and He hasn't changed His day.

Acts 20:7 is a better verse for that
A closer examination of that meeting in Acts reveals it is in actuality what we would today call Saturday night... But yes, in biblical context, then the first day. What I see likely is that the Christians meet as was their custom on Sabbath, with Paul the likely preacher, with Paul departing the following day, Sunday, for Troas. The Sabbath meeting concludes with a meal, the preaching is continued past midnight, the fella falls asleep out of the window, Paul prays, raises him up, and leaves that morning. Traveling on a Sunday morning is even more support for the observance of the Sabbath the day before than for the sacredness of Sunday.
I agree with the comment btw regarding the collection being "set aside' or "laid in store", as opposed to actually being collected. This was a one off collection for those in Jerusalem in need, set aside for Paul to pick up as he passes through. Not even a weekly collection there to support a change in the day.

Himself, yes we rest in Him, are you sure its just not Pride,
It can't be pride. Observing the Sabbath the way Good intended and the way He set it up in the beginning negates pride. Think about it. Adam and Eve are standing there looking about them wondering where they are, what they are, and where they came from. This is in the very last part of the sixth day. They look about then at creation. A finished creation in which they played no part. God did it all. Their first full day of existence was then spent with their Creator, a majestic holy Being Who told them how and why they were there. They had to accept everything God said in faith. No pride possible there. Just loving benevolent grace. And the 5 to commandment confirms that in asking is to remember. Remember what? That we eat created beings and our Creator loves us and wants to be with us, setting aside and sanctifying one day in order for us to make that appointment. But it doesn't end there.
Later, Moses breaks those tables when he witnesses that disgusting pagan festival and God had to rewrite them. Only this time there is a subtle change... Not by way of cancelling and contradicting what had been given before, but complimenting it. This time there Sabbath was given as a itmemorial if their deliverance from bondage and slavery.
Today, we are also delivered from bondage and slavery. It's a finished work at creation, and it's a finished work at Calvary. There is no room for pride, in fact honouring God's holy day is an antidote to pride, legalism, and easy grace. It's not kept as an obligation, but because we want to. We love God and He loves us and we meet with Him on His holy day to celebrate and delight in His goodness, His love, His grace, and His precious gifts of life and rest.
