That would be to accommodate their piloting until they reached their intended target. A concussion or ear damage could adversely affect their piloting prematurely. (They were the precursor to the guided missile.)

Did you know that the four countries on the globe where the highest number of O - negative blood types predominantly (based on highest % of O- among other blood types per population) live are: Australia, New Zealand, Brazil and Spain. I actually have this blood type.
