I am in a very silly mood today so I am going to post a terrible question. You can treat is seriously or otherwise. The question is...

What is the point of going to a Sunday morning meeting, having fellowship with the back of people's heads most of whom you never talk to unless you are in a small fellowship, taking a sip of wine and a piece of bread to make you feel good, and listening to someone rabbiting on about this that and the other, most of which is total rubbish and in some cases, the guy up front dresses up in woman's clothes? And which most of it is nowhere to be found in the bible.

Not much point at all marksman, unless the worship is true worship and true praise. But even if we are allowed to meet we can't even sing in church meetings while the 'plague' is still around.

It's not silly....it's a valid question.

Maybe it's time for Christians to start up more house Church's...or even plan an underground movement and keep it as a plan to gather when things get really bad. @marksman , you are right...having "fellowship" with the back of peoples heads. Even pre-covid, true fellowship and cohesion was lacking sorely. And, when services are over, everyone scoots out the door like the place was on fire!!!
Oh things, they are a changin! And, the small groups are not really inspired very much in my experience. I really miss the old time bible studies we used to have on Wed. nights. Learned more from them (had a great teacher) than I ever did from the pastor's services

Hi marksman. The sweet and simple answer to your iconoclastic query is best summed up in the phrase "birds of a feather flock together."

I have quite a lot of material on the subject you raise and as a promoter of spiritual growth I am persuaded that we people tend to settle for what is convenient and established to the extent that trying to change a staid congregation and its denominational structure from within is an exercise in futility.

Having gone from the institutional, denominational, formalised culture to the informal, interactive home fellowship style I can say that neither are without problems. I advise my associates not to waste time tilting at windmills whenever they become morbid about the "horrors" of "pagan christianity", and Jesus Himself said not to uproot the wheat by pulling out the weeds amongst it.

Simple in-home fellowship can be satisfying, fulfilling, edifying, and dynamic...until it isn't. It then becomes a question of how much conflict you are prepared to endure.

Pro 17:1 Better is a dry morsel with quietness, Than a house full of feasting with strife.

We don't go to a man-made church, so can't really comment about that.
Men dressed like women in church...ugh,
no kidding?

We have "church" at home and have for years.
Don't watch TV, but have a couple of Pastors we watch on the phone occasionally.

Glory to God,
Taken

The people at my church never just 'scoot out the door', the problem for the person locking the door was to get people to go home so they could. Before the meeting people chat and have to be hushed so the meeting can start and after the meeting (not service) people gather in the coffee bar for drinks and biscuits and to chat. And strangers we don't know are very conspicuous.

Some ekklesias have a designated welcomer or "visitor host" as I think she was called in one I visited. As ushers in a large AOG congregation I was part of for about 10 years, we wore official ID badges and were trained to look out for troublemakers...sigh!

None with that kind of attitude.

And considering that you have a very strong Calvinistic bent..an attitude is all a person somewhat owns anyway.

The difference between many of today's meetings and those of Paul's day is that he preached all night, and when people fell asleep and fell out the window he raised them up and carried on.
People fall asleep today in less than an hour, ADD.

...in a desperate attempt to try and actually find something positive about such a scenario, I would say that there are those who appreciate the anonymity of such a context, the ability to walk in, pray, and leave unobstructed by idle or forced conversation. A choir and music, within a seemingly sanctified setting, does offer inspiration and meditation. Typically, the guy up front dressed in woman's clothes, is citing or sermonizing from the Bible - a little bit of the Word a day, is better than none. I've always made it a concerted effort to never belong to one Church or congregation, so I continuously enter any Church that I want, if that's the convenient thing to do at the time. There is a time where just having a one-on-one with God is required, and thus, the backs of people's heads is better than being distracted face-to-face.
Therefore, in a manner, I'm glad that they do exist just so that I have that option, if for any reason a more concentrated study context is not available.

To receive Christ, His Real Presence in the Eucharist. For most you hear there is no pint but to go to a big club meeting
Well historyb, I would assume then that you throughout your life, have innumerably partook in the eucharist - 'the real presence of Christ'.
I would have to conclude then that anyone who communes (or integrates?) in such an intimate manner with Christ himself, would by necessity have to be the most edified and sanctified person on the planet, or this forum, ...or at least his neighborhood.
Would that be you?

Please explain to me what you mean by the word to receive Christ, his real presence in the Eucharist as I can't see it anywhere in scripture.

Anonymity is such a foreign concept in the New Testament Church as one of its four pillars is fellowship.

Just a small correction. Paul only preached all night ONCE. It was not a common practice. No one goes to sleep today if the word is life-giving.

For most you hear there is no pint but to go to a big club meeting.

If there is no pint, do you think that unbelievers will be interested in coming? A friend of mine who is a baptist minister started a men's group in the local pub, complete with as many pints you wanted. As a result, his congregation has grown with more men coming to the meetings. They went to the club meetings first at the pub, and then curiosity got the better of them and they started attending the church and got saved.

So it was a good idea to have as many pints as you wanted. And I am still waiting for a reply to my previous question.
