My take on your query on oppression in NZ, and it is dated to some degree, is that the Maori people and the Pakeha (white folks) grew up together ignorant of demanding separate rights, as it was and is very visible in the US with the Pakeha and Blacks, especially.

We were, so to speak, innocent, we mixed as one people. My best friends were Maori. I even trusted many them over whities, although I never made this as a conscious decision. I just 'moved' that way. I never made a conscious difference. In football rugby at school etc, when I grew up and the forces and pressures to conform in society and take sides, this all never really materialized for me and never included a divide for us. We all 'played' and paid our taxes to Rome the same way, together.

Now I have to admit we did have a few gang style 'wars' at school and never in the streets from my view.

I believe since the '80s, the influence of other countries by any means, personal contact and media, in NZ, 'forced' some of the weak minded to be like them. To cry out and say I have rights now, based on my unique culture, native language, features and even my light brown color.

Really though, my colour generally is similar to a typical Maori, for a Paheka. I sport a Mediterranean olive appearance most of the time...I really do not care about all this personally, and never did CR.

It's all evil in my book to go there, to even suggest to mark people for anything. I look at the heart and not the skin or appearance mate....

You got me mixed up with someone else...moved to NZ at a young age, with relatives in Adelaide and Melbourne. Been in OZ, Sydney, Adelaide, Fremantle/ Perth...was not a resident though....

When I went back to NZ in the small town I lived in, about 12 years ago, my American wife observed I spoke like the locals although my tempo/speed was a little slower...yes, I used to speak very, very fast where over here in the US some told me to slow down...I guess I did a bit

It's all Kiwi..not pomy.....and I do still not sound like a Southerner or Yank....folks usually tell me there something different with my accent when I begin to speak to them if they are a stranger....it comes out stronger at times and especially with some choice words....many say, are you from OZ...and not usually NZ...if they think I have an accent from over here, they usually say I'm from Boston or New England...I say 'park the car' like the Bostonians' do...lol

Now I have lost some of the ways I used to pronounce some words such as 'pro-gress'..it comes out as prog-ress as most over here say it.. and then I found out that 'route' is only used over here for a road or direction..not the dirty word as in root....it's funny about accents...and because I can mix it up a bit I became sensitive to all the various accents in America...many deny they have one in the States,,,and they surely do...I just have to hear them speak a few sentences and I can tell the region of the country where they came from..even the Canadians..... most of the time...

I can not speak for Americans of African decent as I have never been their. but I do understand somewhat of what goes on over their.
