I've asked these questions before on various forums and have received various answers (that I can't really remember) but I really want to know what you guys think.

1. What if Mary had said that she didn't want to give birth to Jesus?
2. Why was she a virgin and did she have to be for the prophecy to come true? (The Bible states that she had other children though.)
If Mary had declined God would have found another.

A virgin is a young woman.

The Bible doesn't say one way or the other if James and Joses was Jesus brothers from the same mother.
That happens a lot in the bible.
Like Sarai was Abram's sister. They both had the same father but not the same mother.
Like 1/2 the tribes of Israel, some kids are from the handmaids like Bilkah.. and some from Leah and Rachel..

But it doesn't say Mary had more children. So you can speculate.
It makes no difference to me.

Hugs

The record tells us Jesus had brothers and sisters. Now, that can be turned any which way in an attempt to support certain theories but the answer is quiet obvious to me.

It mentions that He had brothers and unnamed sisters though I do believe.

Yes, The culture of those days was much different than today.. in some places anyways.

Men were able to have many wives and handmaids and concubines.. whatever..
So Jesus had brothers and sisters, from Joseph and maybe not Mary.

Another way to think about it is, brothers and sisters like we have in church.
A group of followers.
Why would Jesus need to make a point of saying,

Jhn 19:25 Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.
Jhn 19:26 When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son!
Jhn 19:27 Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.

If Mary had other children then why assign this one to take care of her?

I personally think there is more to this than meets the eye, but I haven't thought about it yet.
that's all I got for now..
Hugs

1. Don't think she could have as she had to do the will of the Father, just like He hardened pharaoh's heart ,He would had softened hers ,kind of like Paul ,whom didn't have a choice as well, because he was already chosen. in other words , the Elect don't have free will.

2.Her bloodline had to be pure, that's why satan tried to destroy it

Your first question is way out there. I imagine she wouldn't have done....God is not one to force choices. The truth is she saw it as a high honour.

Sex is something quiet different than putting one's finger up ones nose. It is important to learn to understand what the factor is in sex that makes it different otherwise it'll be seen as not much different to putting one's finger up one's nose.

Without understanding this, desire rules and vision is shuttered.

re Mary's other children....She either had children with Joseph after Jesus was born (which I believe) or Joseph was older and a widower with children from a previous union.

The idea that Mary was a perpetual virgin, ie, she never had sex with Joseph after the birth of Jesus is a myth.
The belief that Mary was a perpetual virgin is not a myth.

The simple answer is that she didn't say that she didn't want to give birth to Jesus. There is no alternative universe.

If God is timeless and omniscient, then for God there is no past, present or future. There are no alternatives. He timelessly knows what Mary would say.

Hi @April_Rose,

God knew Mary beforehand, as He knows you and me. He knew her heart and mind, and He would know that she was a virgin and therefore just right to conceive and bare His Son. He would know that she would know the honour that He was bestowing upon her too. He prepared Joseph to be her husband, to provide for her and for His Son, as a Father to Jesus under law, until the time came for Jesus to fulfill His part in the plan and purpose of God.

It was important that Mary was a virgin, for this was a holy seed, and One which had been provisioned by God to save the world and fulfill all righteousness.

God's promise concerning the coming of the seed of the woman, was given way back in Genesis 3:15, and Mary was the only one who could fulfill it, for she was the last of the line which came from King David, through his son Nathan, which ensured the Lord Jesus to be the rightful heir of the throne of David. Both she and Joseph were in the royal line of decent, and were therefore the only ones suitable for this purpose..

God knows all things, and provisions for all things, that His work of reconciliation be fully accomplished.

Praise His Holy Name!

Thank you for being a blessing to me.
In Christ Jesus
Chris

@April_Rose,

'And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord,
And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.
For He hath regarded the low estate of His handmaiden:
for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
For He that is mighty hath done to me great things;
and Holy is His Name.
And His mercy is on them that fear Him from generation to generation.
He hath shewed strength with His arm;
He hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree.
He hath filled the hungry with good things;
and the rich He hath sent empty away.
He hath holpen His servant Israel, in remembrance of His mercy;
As He spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever.'

(Luke 1:46-55)

Does God Ask of a man, whom God "does not know" will do as He asks?

1 John 3:20, KJV:
"For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things."

2. Why was she a virgin

A Female Virgin Womb, IS a Womb untouched
BY a Man's reproductive Organ AND Particularly a Human man's "Corrupt" Seed.

Mary's Virgin Womb, was Already Prepared, to Receive The Word of God, Prepared (BY GOD) IN a body, IN the Likeness as a human man.

Gods Word is Without TAINT (corruption), So Thus Also was His Revealing ON Earth, Without TAINT...revealed forth out from a Virgin Womb.

and did she have to be for the prophecy to come true?

Yes.
A virgin was Foretold.
A virgin birthed the SINLESS Son of man, out from a virgin womb.

(The Bible states that she had other children though.)

A Human female Virgin, IS a Virgin, Before a A male organ or Male Seed enters her womb.

WHAT entered Mary's Virgin Womb, Was The Word of God, Sent from God (in Heaven) Fourth out of Gods Mouth, IN a Body God Prepared, TO Mary's Virgin (untainted) Womb.
(according to the Law of Nature/Mankind) 9 months Later...The Word of God Came Forth out from Mary's Womb...(Something ALIVE came forth OUT from something Alive...i.e. BORN)

And not to OVERLOOK...That "Eternal" ALIVE Word of God..."FIRST" came forth OUT...(BORN) OF "Eternal" ALIVE God.

For what Purpose ... "After" The Word of God, (9 months) Would Mary CONTINUE to Remain A Virgin?

To Defy God?

Gen 9:
And you, be ye fruitful, and multiply; bring forth abundantly in the earth, and multiply therein.

Matt 1:
25 And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name Jesus.

The Highlight of Mankind...is fleeting.
A Natural man is naturally born, naturally dies.
What a person Does to Serve Gods Will...is but For Others men's observation to learn, follow in good example.

However "the" HIGHLIGHT is ON the Lord God

We can certainly hear/read HOW men and women during their natural lifetime specifically Served the Lord...

•••Spent Years in great Service. Preaching Gods Word, Teaching Gods Word, Funding Travels.•••

• Mary mother of the Son of man?
9 months.

Mary had her Role. She complied. Jesus is the Long Standing Highlight.

A Gift from God is what we notice.
However it is the FRUIT of the Gift that IS the Highlight.

Phil 4:
Not because I desire a gift: but I desire fruit that may abound to your account.

It is the FRUIT / THE WORD of GOD that "abounds" (increases) our account.

If Mary and Joseph consecretated their marriage, multiplied offspring, they obeyed Gods Direction....which has zero effect on me.

Jesus' Male and Female Disciples Teaching, Preaching...has a great effect on me.

Jesus' Disciples Hearing, Repeating, Funding travel, food, clothing, rest accommodations, preparing oils ...a great
effect on The teachers and preacher Disciples.

And to Note...Females WERE being designated Bishops, Teaching and Preaching...
Until complaints of Pope Gelasius 5th century... and was halted.

It's the FRUIT that is the Highlight for Every individual man.

Moses, Noah, Matthew, John, Mary...are NOT my INDIVIDUAL"FRUIT"! It is The Word of God, received, as A Gift unto me that IS "MY" Fruit.

Glory to God,
Taken

1. I would think that Mary would have had a choice and would not have been forced to have a child if but she did not want one.
2. Interesting. Maybe because she was pure hearted he chose her. I dont know.

Good questions. :)

1.A.) Because God knows everything, He would not have asked Mary is she was going to reject the offer.

2.B) The last 2 OT "kings", were both evil, and God swore that they would be the end of the species.

So, Had Jesus come from their linage, this would have Contradicted God's word.
Enter the Virgin Birth, where you had Mary in the Linage, but no Man involved with the pregnancy.....So, you have Jesus coming from the correct linage, yet God kept his word and said that no seed from those evil kings would continue the genetic tree.
God is the Father of Jesus.

Thank you @Taken,

I have altered my post in the light of what you have said. When I said, 'pure', I meant in relation to the fact of her virginity.

Thank you

Jewishness and Tribe is determined by parenthood.

God had to choose a mother and father both of the tribe of Judah...not Benjamin or or Levite or any other tribe.

Notice that John the Baptist's parents were Levites but still related?

Parentage and lineage were very important to fulfill the prophecy.
