Fact: Horizon clipping or the "sinking ship" effect.

How It Works

Line of Sight: Your line of sight to the horizon is a straight line tangent to the curved surface of the Earth.
The Obstruction: As an object (like a ship or a distant island) moves away from you, the curved hull of the Earth physically blocks your view of its lower sections first.
The Elevation Factor: When you stand at a high elevation, you can see "over" more of the curve, revealing the base of the object. When you move down to a lower elevation (like the beach), your horizon shrinks, causing the bottom of the object to disappear below the curve.

Yes, that is why on a clear day one can sea France from the top of the white cliffs of Dover, but not from the beach (except, perhaps, for some really tall budlings on the French coast.)
