I know the the bible teaches against tatoos however I think it one of those things that we have to understand in a deeper context then just the surface words.I beleive it falls under the same rules as when the bible talks of types of dress and jewlery, its when your behavior, choice of friends, peoples attitude towards you, that affects your behavior and can cause you to be unhappy or sin that God is trying to warn us about. For example lets say before a person found God they had a picture of the devil tatooed on their arm, people are always going to assume this person is not a christain,so christains stay away from him and people who are not christains think he is one of them so he is in danger of being befriened and put in an anti christain evoirment where he may be tempted to sin. If a boy sees a girl with a povacitive tatoo does he automatically form a opinon about this girl? does he think there goes a nice christain girl? So you can see how the way you dress or a tatoo may be comunicating a message to others witch in turn can cause you to act or react in negative ways I beleive this is why the bible warns us against it.Not that it(the tatoo) in its self is a sin.hope I made this understanable.

I look at tattoos with the attitude Paul had concerning many things. To the pure all things are pure. And also, if what I do in my liberty offends one of my brothers, then for the sake of conscience of the weaker brother I will abstain. Is is all about our neighbors and living peacefully with love and consideration of others within the body of Christ. This is a forgotten lesson and many abuse the liberty we have in Christ and so offend many.

I disagree with Kriss. The only mention of tattoos in the Bible tells us "Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you, I am the Lord." This is the KJV, given to me by a Mormon missionary.:naughty: I take it as a reference to ancient mourning/funerary rituals practiced by the Sumerians, Babylonians, or perhaps Egyptians, something now lost to time and no longer practiced.I have a bunch of tattoos, but nothing offensive. I'm not looking for validation for having tattoos and perhaps getting more in the future; I just don't think it applies to Christians.

Very interesting question. I really had to think about this one. I found this page on tatoos and what it says in the Bible..http://www.biblebelievers.com/watkins_tattoos/bible.htmlPersonally, I don't like tatoos and I think a lot of people go overboard on them. However, as long as it's not completely out there screaming "look at me, look at me," then I'm okay with it. Some people that have large, provacative, or strategically placed tatoos that definately cause a distraction. I guess it's just a matter of taste.

I have a simple tribal design tattoo on my left arm. I got it before I was a Christian. I remember it cost me about $90 or so. I probably wouldn't get another one because I think it would be a poor use of money, especially considering I am a public servant that does not make that much money and I have enough struggles with spending money on stupid stuff as it is; I don't need to make it worse if I don't have to.

Dad of 3Its o.k. if you disagree with me its happened a least once or twice before in my life (lol) I just don't understand what your disagreeing with the fact the bible warns against tattoos or the fact that they can cause others to judge you unfairly?

I know this is an old thread, but hope you don't mind me adding my 10 pence worth.I seem to remember coming across this discussion somewhere else and I'll put the same opinion forward as I did then.Firstly though, I would agree with Gibby on the 'poor use of money', and I would go with this regardless of whether I could 'afford' to spend money this way or not. To my mind, tattoos are a form of graffitti, except, instead of using a spray can on a wall, you use a needle and ink on your skin. The other point is that, if God had intended us to have writing and pictures on our bodies, we'd have been created that way. Look at the beautiful diversity of nature and the animal kingdom, the colours and patterns of plants and the astounding markings that can be found among the animal kingdom. It should not be hard to believe that, if it had been God's will, he could have provided us with any kind of patterned or colour schemed skin he chose. But he didn't. And I really don't believe that the reason he didn't was that he intended for us to do it ourselves. Why do people get tattoos? Perhaps the answer to this question might in turn give us the answer to the question of whether or not it is a sin to have them

I know this is an old thread, but hope you mind me adding my 10 pence worth. We all learn as we go sometimes it does us all good to revisit our past so feel free to bring up any old threads or start a new thread on an old subject we have many new members that might want to weigh in on the subjects that were closed so if you find one you would like to talk about go ahead and start it as a new thread

Carer, that is very true. That is a great way to explain things and a different way to think about tattoos.

Yes, this is an old thread, but I haven't been here in a long time.I understand what the Bible says about tattoos, but I think it's for a differing reason, stated above, something that doesn't apply today. I've always been something of an outcast and I frankly don't have time to worry about what people think of me, tattoos or not. I plan to eventually get sleeved as money allows. I don't care if people look at them or not; I do it for me and no one else. If someone happens to appreciate it along the way, fine. I don't have anything offensive and don't plan to get any that are; almost everything I have is 1940s era traditional.

First of all, I want to commend everyone for being so calm and understanding on this topic. I've been to so many places where this would be SUCH a heated subject.

I've heard both sides of this, from many different people. "no the bible says nothing about tattoos" "yes it does" etc etcI don't have an opinion myself (yet) But I am wondering, for those of you who DO believe the bible says no tattoos, where would I find that? I see what Dad of 3 has posted, but I am wondering if perhaps there is more about it that we missed?

Thanks

Well, the book of Leviticus is the closest thing you're going to find to instructions about tattoos: Leviticus 19:28Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the LORD. Key thing here is that "dead" is Hebrew "nephesh" which is better rendered as "dead soul" in translation. This can be confirmed by a Strong's. Interesting thing here is that this speaks, to me at least, to what Carer said about the motives and intent of getting a tattoo. Cutting the flesh was a popular Caananite tradition and I think that's why it was specifically addressed here. Reading the sentence as an English major, it seems to me that the two acts are different and the first part is not an auxilary of the second.

Not to beat a dead horse, but while I was "away" from God I got a tattoo of the Jerusalem Cross (crusader's cross) on my left shoulder. I love it. I want people to know I am Christian, and to remind myself that I am when I have stumbled and fallen. Hope God doesn't mind too much. I think in these cases it's where your heart is. Make sense?

What do you think the bible says about tattoos? What are your opinions on them?
I do not remember anything where the Bible says anything about tattoos, but for those that have them, it does not bother me. For those that judge because of them needs something else to do with their time. There are bigger things to worry about.

...Tatoos...I hate tatoos, because all it really does is...poisoning thy body, that which belongs to God. I don't want any tatoos at all. I rather want people to see me as a Christian...not by appearance...but by good fruits. That's my 2 cents...OLD THREAD...Leviticus 19:28Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the LORD.Lovest thou in Christ Jesus our Lord and Saviour.

Chrsitians ought to concentrate on preaching Jesus. Why do you even consider following the world's trend? We live in the world but we should not be of the world.
