    More on GJohn 1.1

Of course a proper name can only be definite. Not following you here.

    When did this happen?

Saying that he was "elevated" to a higher position implies a prior point in time when he was not at that height. And I see no way such an elevation could have occurred before his earthly birth. The first (and only) time he assumed a lower position was upon becoming incarnate -- when he...

    When did this happen?

I'm in that camp. And John 17:5 seems to support the notion.

    More on GJohn 1.1

As far as I know, Greek has no indefinite article. That has to be pulled out of the sentence's context.

THE Trinity can Now be discussed.

Don't you think 1st John 1:9 ("If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness") is intended for born-again Christians who thereafter lapse into sin? It is not speaking of confession or repentance that is part of the process...

THE Trinity can Now be discussed.

Then my understanding of "deity" is messed up. God is deity by definition, isn't it?

Which is the same as worshiping God.

It is true, because Jesus said it is...

Let me push back a bit here, and explain why I still think the cross alone was salvific and the resurrection was simply the proof that the cross actually worked. Imagine development of an antidote to a deadly disease whose death rate was 100%. The injection turns out to be effective 100% of...

It is true, because Jesus said it is...

When thinking of Christ's death and resurrection, I see the death as salvific and the resurrection as proof of the cross's efficacy. That would go quite ways to explaining Paul's statement.

THE Trinity can Now be discussed.

Supporting -- but not proving -- the thesis. It indicates John's view of Christ's pre-existence, before the world began. That's not "proof" of the Trinity (or even the Binity). Evidence, perhaps, but not proof. As I have said several times, there are verses supporting it (John 17:5 is one)...

    Exploring Trinitarian Logic

I've been thinking about that a lot lately. Conceptualizing by analogy is what we humans look to do we cannot express a concept in human terms -- and the “stuff” of “Godness” is certainly on that list. But whatever that ousia may be, if it subsists in each of the three “Persons” within the...

THE Trinity can Now be discussed.

Oh, I don't think John 17:5 proves the Trinity. I don't think ANY Scripture verses prove the Trinity. Some verses support it, others go the opposite way. Scripture is equivocal on the subject. I think I've said that several times.

Sweeping the Polytheism of Ancient Israel Under the Rug

Great question. I don't think we can limit it to twelve. There were more than twelve kingdoms in the region.

My guess is, the national gods of rival states mentioned in Deut. 4:7.

Agree. And we can include other gods that the Israelites didn't worship.

Sweeping the Polytheism of Ancient Israel Under the Rug

I'm going with the New Living Translation on this one. It confirms the each-nation-gets-a-god theory. (a la Deut. 4:7)

    Exploring Trinitarian Logic

As you may know, I am a fellow Trinitarian. But the Torah's use of "Elohim" never impressed me as support for Christ's divinity -- mainly because the ancient Israelites thought there were multiple gods. (I started a thread on this a few months ago.)

    Exploring Trinitarian Logic

I'm not aware of this, David. I am aware of the converse -- i.e., JESUS saying "no one comes to the Father except through me" (John 14:6). What do you mean here?

    Exploring Trinitarian Logic

She has a frame of reference that is comfortable, so she has no desire to look beyond it. When folks still believed the Earth was flat, no doubt some of them took their spyglasses and stood on the shore watching ships sail toward the horizon. Through their spyglasses they would have noticed...
