"One man's trash..." I appreciate your feedback but please let me make up my own mind on what I choose to read or not read.

If I burned the books of authors who offend me then there would be no books.

Thank you for your feedback. I did not know that about Barclay and will keep it in mind as I read his works.

Why don’t you believe Satan has been defeated?

I prefer "fever dream" or perhaps plain "trippin' on something he smoked." ;-P Nevertheless, there is just too much evil in the world to think Satan is not still mucking up the works. His power may be diminished from the days of Zeus and Apollo, but he still has a lot of sway over what happens.

Why don’t you believe Satan has been defeated?

In Revelation, Jesus defeats Satan and locks him in a pit for a thousand years. During that thousand years, Jesus rules and peace is on Earth. Then Satan is released from the pit along with his beast. Satan scourges the planet for 42 months. Most people die. Then Jesus throws Satan into the lake...

My last Barclay quote for the day since my brain is fried from all this heavy thinking... ;-D I'm posting this to help myself and others understand the technical meanings of justification and sanctification. "Jesus begins by putting sinners into a right relationship with God even when they are...

Another interesting item from the same book. "It is the supreme discovery of the Christian life that we do not need to torture ourselves with a losing battle to earn God's love but rather need to accept in perfect trust the love which God offers to us. True, after that, any man of honour is...

    YESSS! Answered prayer!

I am overjoyed for your friend. Yes, ESV is much easier to read than some others. It's a good starting point. When I started the Bible it was daunting to figure out where to start. I would recommend starting with the five books of Moses, then Luke, Acts and Romans (because these are targeted...

I just came across this in my reading. Timing seems appropriate. "Paul told the Jews that they were taking the mercy of God as an invitation to sin rather than as an incentive to repentance. it was Heine who made the famous, cynical statement. He was obviously not worrying about the world to...

How do we reconcile the penalty of sin being death with the redefinition of sin to include our thoughts? For example: "Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery: but I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed...

So what does our hypothetical child need to do to really get daddy mad? Is there a point at which daddy throws in the towel and walks away?

Outside looking in it appears that daddy is pissed off all the time (OT style God) when in reality he's a very loving father (NT style God) who's just trying to teach his kid how to grow up properly.

I imagine a father and his two year old. The child kind of understands right from wrong, or at least understands when daddy says not to do something, but kids being kids can't help but screw up, a lot. But daddy totally understands (the kid is two, after all) and forgives without question...

Is this saying we can 'sin' (as in fall short of God's righteousness [e.g. being in correct relation with God]) but since we are under grace and not the law, said 'sin' (lower case) is not a 'Sin' (upper case) that jeopardizes our correct relation (righteousness) with God? It seems pretty...

"For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace." (Romans 6:14) but also "for until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law" (Romans 5:13)

Is there a difference between accidental/incidental sinning post salvation, e.g a weak willed man who can't help but drink too much and get in corresponding trouble from same, and intentional sinning, e.g. a man who is jealous of his neighbor and actively seeks to steal (or worse!) from him? It...

The word "obligation" is what I want to focus on. Other translations use "debt". Whom does that apply to? Within this context, who is obligated to whom?

How do you understand Romans 4:4-5? 4 Now to the one who works, wages are not credited as a gift but as an obligation. 5 However, to the one who does not work but trusts God who justifies the ungodly, their faith is credited as righteousness.
