Where I find the struggle often lies is that Christians today believe that WE apply the blood of Jesus, when it is Jesus who applies it to whom he will.

That verse only helps you if you assume the meaning of 'his will', jiggyfly :) God gives us enough freedom to choose destruction, and enough love to turn from it.
