Sounds like repentance was missing, yet one would have thought someone of Philips calibre would have realised this and not baptised him. Can you expand on your second point please.

Being under financial obligation to deliver a Spiritual Service is the problem. I have first hand knowledge of the stress one can come under to deliver a sermon when the personal communion with Him is lost. This leads to dishing up second hand 'inspiration' which God hates.

Yes - they received support - there was no one needy among them. But being under contract to deliver spiritual service is a different animal in my opinion. hmn By the way - how soon this became a business practice is a matter of Church History - you wont find that answer in Scripture.

The Bliss of Religious Homeostasis - Don't Rock the Boat

Sounds like you were subject to an unhealthy spiritual culture. There is but One mediator for each of us - Jesus... It is the anointing of His Spirit within that confirms truth - all else leads to bondage. We are a long way from where we are meant to be as His Church, and doctrine, no matter...

@marks This is a quote from the Catholic Encyclopedia A stipend is a fixed pay, salary; retribution for work done; the income of an ecclesiastical living. In canon law stipend is a general designation of means of support (sustentatio congrua or congrua) provided for the clergy. In the early...

I was thinking again about our first martyr falling prey to the religious Jews as Jesus did. What seems way worse is when believers are martyred by the church ! Is this not a sign that we have a fundamental problem when this happens - Is there not in fact a pride in the church that took hold...

I was making the subtle distinction between 'paid' and 'supported' - contracted and committed - teacher and Father - institution and family.

    Acts 6...more study to come!

The way my bible study works is that it is a team effort and I am not the sole 'teacher' So my contribution is not exhausive by any means, but each shares as they feel led. The early posts spell out how we intend to run the thread.

Friends - we are waiting to begin Acts 7. However I have just heard one of the best sermons by far in recent times. Pete Greig speaks about the Lords Prayer (and he touches on the prayer in Acts 4.) This resonated deeply with me - it is 45 minutes and I can't more highly recommend it...

Yes, structure has been and is critical but we have drawn on the practices of the world and it is hindering and limiting our potency.

I didn't answer this sorry. My deep concern is that we now have professional Christians under contract. There are problems with this. 1. There is a disconnect between the giving heart and the support of those in the gathering. The direct connection between giving receiving and enabling is...
