Well well, here we have the three interpretations of Romans 7 before us. 1) @Episkopos says the Pharisee Paul 2) @marks says the normal Christian life 3 me says it is the ABnormal Christian life where a work of God is required ie Spirit baptism as a second work of grace.

When he says not I, I take that to mean he does not approve of himself and what he was doing.

No I do not think Paul was 'born again' at the point you said. In Romans 6 he is talking about what one should be, that sin should be dead but in Romans 7 he finds that he can no longer continue unless his walk matches his talk and he is entirely sanctified then, well when he praises God..

I think that what changed was the conviction of the Holy spirit whereas before this, he considered it normal as it were, for him to slip up and sin, but now, under conviction, he could no longer tolerate sinning.

It is when he tried to obey that he found something in him that did not want to obey. I think it was when he was under the conviction of the Holy Spirit.

I believe his words were the words of a man out of control.

Yes I think it has a lot to do with it and my upbringing was in a rather godless place amongst heavy industry workers from Ireland where being religious was a bad thing. Only the middle class went to church.
