Heresy means to bring division. Identifying with a group can lead to tribalism. Tribalism is a very primitive and worldly way to protect oneself from harm by seeking safety in a group. We see that spirit in gangs and in politics. But this should never be a motivation of a believer in Christ.

I think that people like to feel proud of the accomplishments of others. There is a prevalent attitude that comes from a feeling of security based on belonging (in a human temporal way) to the 'right" organization. But come judgment day will God judge you by association...or by your own works...
