1John 2:6 whoever says he abides in Him ought to walk in the same way in which He walked.

I wonder what the apostle means by that, walking as Jesus (God in the flesh) seems impossible to me since Jesus was without sin and I don't.

For context -

1John 2:1 My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.
1John 2:2 He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.
1John 2:3 And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments.
1John 2:4 Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him,
1John 2:5 but whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in him:
1John 2:6 whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.

So how to understand v6 ?

Maybe the possibility or impossibility of it isn't as important as the walking itself.

Same as working out which of the following applies to you to be saved.
Does Matt 25:42-46 apply to you to be & remain saved ?
Or is it Titus 3:5-7, Eph 2:8-9, Gal 2:16, Rom 3:28, Rom 4:5, Rom5:1 ??

For me, the key to understanding this and similar Scriptures, is that God looks at the desire of our heart.

1 Samuel 16:7
"For the LORD sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart.”

1 John 1:7
But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another,
and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin

I like you quoting Eph 5:1-2 because it is a kind of conclusion (Therefore) what Paul said before, chapter 4:17-end.

Thank you.

What bothers me about v6 is not so much about being saved but the DEMAND to walk like Jesus. And then I immediately think -> wait a minute, I am not Jesus and Jesus walked without sin, am I supposed to live sinless as well?

Looking for feedback on this.

Jesus said we should seek first the kingdom of God.
I suggest prayfully reading Hebrews 12.

Just discussing here, but I believe one aspect is that He walked separated/consecrated unto God. In the world but not OF it. Walking in the Spirit and not in the flesh is another aspect. And He only ever did what He saw the Father doing, so I believe we need to seek God's will in everything too. Sometimes we are trying to serve God in ways that seem right to us, but may not be God's explicit will, or we may really be doing it out of self interest like religious pride or self-righteousness etc. Jesus walked self-lessly.......denying self (which is a way of saying being dead to self, I believe).

It actually may not be a demand per se.....the scripture only says if we say we abide in him we must walk as He walked. So it is giving us the meaning of abiding in Him which is to say walking as He walked. And I take that to mean walking in union with Him, in lockstep with Him. Because as it says elsewhere, we can do nothing apart from Him. Abide in me and I will abide in you.......speaks of a continual abiding. That is our aim and goal I believe.

What would be the aim , the goal of a truly converted sheep .
TO walk pleasing UNTO GOD . For t hat is the desire HE places Upon our heart .
And without FAITH , oh it is IMPOSSIBLE to please GOD . HE whose faith is in GOD
would BELIEVE GOD . that be the key . yet many seem to rather beleive men
not GOD . And now the worst of it all they have brought upon this generation .
Not only did they choose to heed man over God , they chose to now believe
THERE IS NO NEED TO BELIEVE , TO BELIEVE ON JESUS THE CHRIST , as that WHORE sells her love song
of interreligious anti christ dialogue to the nations , the false relgoins and a heap of even christendom .
GUESS who the SHEEP gonna beleive . IF ya said GOD , thus HIS CHRIST , thus HIS WORDS ,
WELL A BIG OL fat AMEN TO YA SISTER . Eve fell for that lie and her husband did eat of her hand .
JESUS overcame it . AND that JESUS said to even the jews
IF YE believe NOT that I AM HE then ye shall DIE in your sins .

It's like the fruit of the Spirit. Where the Spirit is at work there is evidence. Evidence of an unseen world....evidence of things not seen. So this is about the evidence. If we are filled with the Spirit the evidence will be love, peace, joy....and POWER to fulfill what God wants from us.

Abiding in Christ is the same. If we abide in Christ then the evidence should be that we have the same walk as Jesus...according to power. That is IF we are actually abiding in Christ. The "ought" in the verse doesn't mean we need to try doing what we can't do from ourselves, no....it means that we will only be able to walk as Jesus walked IF we abide in Him. The verse is not about trying to walk as Jesus did....we OWE the Lord to go to Him and enter into Him to be where He is. Holiness is about location. To be found in Him. In Him is no sin.

Grace is about POWER to walk as Jesus walked (in its full measure only, not just as an initial sample as a free gift)..Just like the 10 lepers most don't go back to Jesus after their initial healing. Only one did.

It actually may not be a demand per se.....the scripture only says if we say we abide in him we must walk as He walked.

It's only a demand when we claim to abide in Him. The proof is in the walking. The ministers who are cast away were lawless. They were sinners who claimed to abide in Christ....when they didn't...making them liars and lawless. They tried defending themselves by the things they thought they did for Jesus. But that's when He says...I never knew you. Now that is true of about 99% of believers. Not the claiming, but the abiding. Many believers are honest and claim nothing of the higher walk in their testimony. But many Protestants have been indoctrinated to make false claims. People get samples and have some sort of experience with a residue of God's presence....but they never GO TO GOD to know Him where He is......in holiness. They never visit the Lord, they rely only on the visitations from Him that they may or may not have experienced.
At least in theory, I suppose. Honesty is more important than encounter when it comes to God. We are not to be the ones doing the elevating. And even if we are elevated for a time...that doesn't guarantee a good outcome for us. The fear of the Lord is still the beginning of wisdom. It's not about agreeing with statements, it's about being DOERS of the word and not just hearers of, and agreeing with, the word.

The man who claims to abide in Christ but who doesn't....is called a liar and a thief.....trying to enter into the kingdom by some other way than through the door who is Christ. Zechariah's flying scroll (Zech 5) is a universal warning against false naming and claiming and stealing away the things of God for oneself.

Then I turned, and lifted up mine eyes, and looked, and behold a flying roll.
2 And he said unto me, What seest thou? And I answered, I see a flying roll; the length thereof is twenty cubits, and the breadth thereof ten cubits.
3 Then said he unto me, This is the curse that goeth forth over the face of the whole earth: for every one that stealeth shall be cut off as on this side according to it; and every one that sweareth shall be cut off as on that side according to it.
4 I will bring it forth, saith the Lord of hosts, and it shall enter into the house of the thief, and into the house of him that sweareth falsely by my name: and it shall remain in the midst of his house, and shall consume it with the timber thereof and the stones thereof.

Looking for feedback on this.
If not sinless, what do you propose? Sinful?
Christ commanded on at least two separate occasions "Go and sin no more" Once with a warning, " Lest something worse happen to you." Sinless perfection, or total sanctification is absolutely the goal, but unless I am woefully mistaken, Christ was the only one who has ever lived a sinless life.

Christ told Peter "He that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean..."
The implication being, walk in the newness of life in which we have been given. We have been washed in His precious blood, and are now free to walk in His Holy Spirit.

"If we walk in the Spirit we will not fulfill the deeds of the flesh." This is a true statement.

"If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves." Is also a true statement.

There are so many scriptures related to this topic, it would truly be difficult to list them all.

How did Christ walk with God? What was the example that He set for us? If we can answer this, then we know how we ought to be walking. Can we expect to do so with the same level of precision and success? Not all the time, no. Our walk with Christ will be a difficult one, good days, horrible days, victorious days, and days of defeat so awful that we will fall upon our faces in sorrow.

"The righteous falls seven times but YHVH lifts him up."

Sin and death have been conquered.

"We have this treasure in an earthly vessel."

This earthly vessel must be nailed to the cross daily.

Walking with Christ does indeed mean to walk in victory over sin. But that victory belongs to Christ alone.

If you have a concordance, look up the word "walk" in the New Testament. I think you will find the answers you are searching for.

Okay, thank you all for your feedback.

This is what I believe :

1. In Him is no sin, in Him I am perfect. Not that I am perfect, I am not, but I am perfect because He sees me through the blood of His Son. Offered Scripture :

Efez 2:5 even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ— by grace you have been saved—
Efez 2:6 and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,

2.
I am currently not aware of any sin, which does not mean I am sinless, I am 100% sure there must be unaware sins in my life and I think this is the difficult part in our conversations and where things go different directions. Offered Scriptures :

Filipp 3:12 Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own.
Filipp 3:13 Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead,
Filipp 3:14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

Peter -

Matt 26:32 But after I am raised up, I will go before you to Galilee.”
Matt 26:33 Peter answered him, “Though they all fall away because of you, I will never fall away.”
Matt 26:34 Jesus said to him, “Truly, I tell you, this very night, before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.”
Matt 26:35 Peter said to him, “Even if I must die with you, I will not deny you!And all the disciples said the same.

Good old Peter in love with the Lord meant every word what he said, that is on that moment. But then (just) a couple hours later when he realized his life was in danger he had forgotten what he said earlier, willing to die for Jesus. It seems that Peter did not knew himself well enough at that time of his life, what a great lesson he must have learned! Maybe it is just me but Peter's story made a deep impression on me, in the sense, never ever trust the flesh and its inborn self-preservation. Paul found out in Romans 7.

3. So, what do I do with my sinful flesh, I am born again, so I hate sin. I think that's automatic for every born again because the indwelling Holy Spirit tells you so. Many Scripture passages apply, I will take my favorite :

1Joh 1:5 This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
1Joh 1:6 If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.
1Joh 1:7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.
1Joh 1:8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
1Joh 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
1Joh 1:10 If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

If I walk in his light there is no sin in me, even my unaware sins are forgiven. verse 7

If I become aware of sin, I confess my sin and I am cleaned from my unaware sins. verse 9

And so I can continue my walk in the light, verse 7.

~~~~~~~~
Note to Epi, is there victory over sin? Of course! It's by the indwelling Holy Spirit, without Him I am nothing. In my old life although raised as a Christian there was zero awareness of sin, just the things of my moral upbringing. Like Paul in Romans 7 that all changed after being born again becoming aware of sin by the Holy Spirit and how deep that cuts.
Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ -- Filipp 1:2
Jut my thoughts here of how I understand these things and hope it isn't too long-winded.
The bible says if we walk in the Spirit we will not fulfill the lusts of the flesh. So when someone is walking in the spirit they are not sinning in thought or in deed because they are walking above the flesh and old man....."this body of death" is put under our/Christ's feet, subdued, inert......and we are walking in the new man, through Christ's Spirit.
That doesn't mean we don't "have" sin as John wrote...because not only have we sinned in the past (unlike Jesus who never sinned), and sin still exists in our flesh/old man (the body is dead because of sin).......but it just means we are not walking in it; we are not walking after the flesh, but after the spirit. The potential is there to make walking in the spirit a kind of permanent state, though I don't know how realistic it is for most. And I don't even know if everyone is really called to that. It is far more common that we taste of it from time to time, and perhaps more regularly for those who are ministering in a specific ministry. Though I don't think that means we should be satisfied with tastes per se, since the bible says we are to keep reaching for what lies ahead.
For me the issue is about consecration (laying our life down on the altar entirely for the Lord - being set apart/separated entirely for Him and wholly surrendered to Him as a living sacrifice). Jesus laid His life down for us, but are we laying our life down entirely for Him in return or really only parts of our life? We are betrothed but are we actualizing and truly being united with the Lord in His death by the death of our old man? It has been accomplished and laid up in the heavenly realm for us, but are we apprehending it, ie, are we bringing it down to where the rubber meets the road in our life/heart?
I think walking in the light is at least partly about being honest with God and with ourselves as His light shows us where or how we still fall short. We have fellowship with one another when we are walking in honesty and not pretending that we are perfect.
I wonder if each person is simply responsible to keep following as the Lord leads....as we are His workmanship....and I question whether this issue of holiness is something that should be imposed on people.....to me it seems to be not something that can be entered into under compulsion, but is a free will offering. The bondslave having served his term was set free to do as he willed, but he came back and offered his life to the Master not under circumstances of force/compulsion, but out of love given freely. I think it is like children being born into a family doesn't have a free will choice as such to be with the family and parents as he grows, but once becoming an adult he becomes free to either work in the family business so to speak under his father's leadership or to go his own way.
Exo 21:2-6
“If you buy a Hebrew servant, he shall serve six years; and in the seventh he shall go out free and pay nothing.
“If he comes in by himself, he shall go out by himself; if he comes in married, then his wife shall go out with him.
“If his master has given him a wife, and she has borne him sons or daughters, the wife and her children shall be her master’s, and he shall go out by himself.
“But if the servant plainly says, ‘I love my master, my wife, and my children; I will not go out free,’ (in other words his life is bound up with the master and he finds he has no life without him)
“then his master shall bring him to the judges. He shall also bring him to the door, or to the doorpost, and his master shall pierce his ear with an awl; and he shall serve him forever. (here I believe we see a picture of Jesus who is the door to the kingdom…..and joining him in his death on the cross…being pierced)
1John 2:6 whoever says he abides in Him ought to walk in the same way in which He walked.
I wonder what the apostle means by that, walking as Jesus (God in the flesh) seems impossible to me since Jesus was without sin and I don't.
For context -
1John 2:1 My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.
1John 2:2 He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.
1John 2:3 And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments.
1John 2:4 Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him,
1John 2:5 but whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in him:
1John 2:6 whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.
So how to understand v6 ?
We understand 1John 2:6 by considering these verses too:
He that commiteth sin is of the devil. 1 John 3:8.
Whosoever abideth in Him sinneth not, whosoever sinneth hath not seen Him neither known Him John 3:6
Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin 1 John 3:9
He that abideth in Him ought himself also to walk, as even as He walked 1 John 2:6
He that saith I know Him and keepeth not His commandments, is a liar and the truth is not in him. 1John 2:4
Little children, let no man deceive you, he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as He is righteous. 1 John 3:7
My little children, these things I write to you that you sin not. 1 John 2:1
To walk as Jesus walked, means to be led as Jesus was led, that is to say, to be led by the Spirit.
Paul is adressing as those with knowledge of the law and desire to do God's will or therefore believers, to whom he said he was an apostle to the Gentiles - not to Jews. Paul was not talking about how he was as a Pharisee. Then, he said in Phil 3, 3-10 as to righteousness, under the law blameless.
He says 'walk not after the flesh but after the spirit'. A walk is always refering to a believers life not an unsaved person.
Struggle with sin is proof that sanctification is taking place.
It is greatly to be grieved over, that believers who are going though conviction, are told that 'it is the devil' or their own lack of faith when in fact it is the Holy Spirit.
The early church called this phase Purification, and one must be grateful to the Lord as He is speaking to His child therefore the best way is to determine to hear Him rather than listen to men.
The way of holiness involves being led by the Spirit so one must relearn where to find guidance, through revelation from God and practise hearing Him.
Romans tells this experience in chapters 6 - 8, the most wonderful chapters in the Bible.
If the person continues to struggle rather that give up, he will enter the next phase of Illumination when all will be revealed, which gets a man out of Romans 7 into Romans 8, where he will have real peace of communion with God as he awaits the fullness of theosis
We understand 1John 2:6 by considering these verses too:
He that commiteth sin is of the devil. 1 John 3:8.
Whosoever abideth in Him sinneth not, whosoever sinneth hath not seen Him neither known Him John 3:6
Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin 1 John 3:9
He that saith I know Him and keepeth not His commandments, is a liar and the truth is not in him. 1John 2:4
Yesterday I had a bad day. Windows managed to destroy itself (thank you Bill) on my main PC up to the point it even refused to boot and I was forced to do a clean Windows 11 install, meaning the loss of zillion fine tuned tools I use, thus reinstall everything and hope for the best. And so the stress level raised, ending in an uncommon yet very bad mood, knowing by a long time experience the road ahead to restoration would be another stressful period for 4-5 days. So I sinned, I confessed. I believe I am forgiven.
But the 1 John passages above tell a different story, I am from the devil, do not know Jesus, I am a liar, t have no truth, I am not born of God because those who are born of God do not sin.
Kindly shed your light on this, will you?
Correct.
Now that we talking, walking in the Sprit, walking in the Light, abide in Him, all the same or are there differences between them ?
It is greatly to be grieved over, that believers who are going though conviction, are told that 'it is the devil' or their own lack of faith when in fact it is the Holy Spirit.
AMEN!
You see that well.
I also do believe in the process of sanctification, imagine that right after the moment of conversion, born of God, the Lord would put all the things (sins) that need change on you, one would collapse under the weight and so (fortunately) it goes step by step, of course depending on the openness for being corrected by the Word and the Holy Spirit. So yesterday was an unpleasant reminder that something totally unexpected that happened still triggered me to become hot tempered, I feel bad about myself, but I also know :
Rom 7:24 A wretched man I am! who shall deliver me out of the body of this death? directly followed by :
Rom 8:1 There is, then, now no condemnation to those in Christ Jesus, who walk not according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit;
Thank you for your kind and insightful post.
Oh ProDeo! I entirely sympathise having pc problems myself ie mine will not accept windows 11 and has 10 which runs out next month and I have been hacked, having terrible problems with passwords. I pray for you.
Know ye not that intense attack is a sign that you are getting somewhere spiritually. The Lord knows that you are seeking Him sincerely.
But the 1 John passages above tell a different story, I am from the devil, do not know Jesus, I am a liar, t have no truth, I am not born of God because those who are born of God do not sin.
The way I have quelled temptations during terrible attacks is to repeat that I have often been wrong about God in the past so will not allow the devil a score. Keep on and allow His way in all things. Bow down in humility and praise Him in all things.
Correct.
All the same. Where there is light there is no darkness.
AMEN!
Thankyou.
Not a step by step removal of sins though. Putting on the new man is like putting on a coat - on or off. The period we are discussing called Purgation by the ecf's, is one of testing and trial where we see what is in our hearts, and how even our best acts are full of selfishness, so that we will come to (usually) a crisis.
Rom 7:24 A wretched man I am! who shall deliver me out of the body of this death? directly followed by :
Rom 8:1 There is, then, now no condemnation to those in Christ Jesus, who walk not according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit;
Hence the crisis and deliverence where there is NOW no condemnation thereafter.
Thank you for your kind and insightful post.
You are welcome. I am greatly encouraged by your progress.
