………… in seeing a description (and critique) of American Religiosity, literally all the way through this song? (Especially the scene with the Military Psychiatrist..... starts at about 8:30)

We have scads of songs (both British and American.. and even Australian) that, although I am sure the original writers never intended anything "Religious" or Christian (two opposite concepts, BTW), have a lot of Spiritual connotations in their words..... depending upon whether or not you choose to listen to them with the ear of Jesus. "Bridge Over Troubled Waters" comes immediately to mind.
"American Religiosity" is the institutionalized mess we have made of what Jesus originally intended to be little more than "a way of life" that led to the unity of mankind and Salvation. We have made it a mishmash of rules, regulation, and pious procedures.
Agreed! Being spiritual is to see God in everything. Being religious is about putting up a facade because there is no ability to see God in anything that doesn't have a religious label.
The bible says to sing to one another in spiritual songs. So then "Bridge over troubled waters" is a spiritual song...to the one with spiritual ears.

I love that song - and yes I can often hear spiritual connotations in many songs that I listen to - but many of my Christian friends just see them as secular - I prefer to be more open minded X

Sadly I couldn't view the video.. Just got a picture instead.. Must be because of where I live. But always loved that song... Remember singing it with friends as we walk along our suburban streets arm in arm across the entire road at two o'clock in the morning. Be late sixties.

Well, first off it was somewhat of a joke with roots on reality. Protestants are known for their tendency to split off into denominations, hence not being very agreeable. Protestants are also known for distancing themselves from church altogether - the joke part is that it seems to be one of the few things they can agree one - get it?
