Most people think that fascism ended with WW2 but thats not true... Fascism remained in the Iberian peninsula. It just got rebranded to authoritarianism... It was/is also big in latin America. In Portugal they had a dictator called Antonio Salazar who ruled from the 30s to the 70s.
Their media was owned by the government and was pure propaganda... People had to watch what they said in public because there where secret police that would eavesdrop into conversations... Many people that voiced dissenting views to friends at the pub would go missing next day never to be seen again... But on the flip side there are many people who loved Salazar, they claim he did a lot for his country, and he does seem like more of a benevolent dictator, if there is such a thing, his policies were generally for the benefit of the nation...
But for my dad in the 60s, that meant going to war when he turned 18... Portugal had several African colonies, and while the other European countries and given back their African colonies, Portugal was still fighting to keep them...
So my dads era in Portugal either went to war or fled... My dad fled to South Africa where he knew some people... He lived there for ten years during the notorious apartheid... He has truly seen it all my dad and i would do well to listen to him carefully and ask his questions for he holds much wisdom...
Anyway when he finally came to Australia and had a family i would remember my dad say to the TV "apfft... propaganda to fool the foolish"

But the Australia was good to him. He worked, raised a family and is now comfortably retired, the government didn't oppress...
