When I was a girl after WW2 they were still using horse drawn carts for some deliveries including coal.I can remember in Detroit, when I was about ,,, 4 !
I do not remember what he was delivering to the family,,,, but,,,,,,,, it was no automobile !
A horse driven wagon with some kind of food........ I guess I was to young to remember!
we moved when I was 5 and I did not see that in another part of Det.
But they did have delivery of milk with a truck ,,,, no horse.........
Other than Dick Tracy none of them ring a bell for me, but you were in the UK and I was in California. I would guess that each country and likely even each regional within a country built up their own set of programs for kids. International commonalities would have been on the rare side.I used to listen to 'Dick Tracy Special Agent' and 'Journey Into Space'. My dad listen to the boxing on Saturday nights, Palm Court and Family Favourites on Sundays and Friday Night is Music Night. There was also The Goon Show and In Town Tonight. I can still remember the music. And during the day my mum had the radio on all day and I remember Workers' Playtime and Mrs Dales Diary, Woman's Hour and then Children's Hour. All on the radio and I think the radio inspired our imaginations far more than TV does for today's kids.
I do well remember the serials. I wanted to see every one but there was no theater in our little town. To go to the movie without our parents we had to ride the bus 8 miles each way. We were allowed to if we could come up with the money. The bus was cheap but I did not often have any money. There was never any allowance but sometimes my mother would help us out on Saturdays. Missing a episode of the serial was especially bad because the end of each one almost always was a real cliff hanger where the hero was about get killed or something like that. You needed to see the next episode to find out.We had the children's matinees at our cinema on Saturday afternoon: Laurel and Hardy, Roy Rogers, Three Stooges, Abbott and Costello as well as the latest episode of the current serial like Flash Gordon or Dick Tracy.
I remember having milk delivered to us in glass bottles. He nearly always came long before I got up in the morning but sometimes I would put out the clean empty bottles the night before for him to replace with full ones. My mother would skim the cream off the top of the newly open bottles of milk and use to make whipping cream as a topping of any number of delicious desserts.I was telling my sister's children that milk in bottles used to be delivered to a metal box on our front stoop by the milkman. They thought it very odd.![]()
The serials were a good marketing ploy on behalf of the cinemas to get the kids coming back every week. I remember there was a character in one serial called the Spider and I used to hide under the seat when he came on the screen. Our cinema wasn't far to walk and cost us sixpence, which was my spending money for the week. Later it went up to ninepence.I do well remember the serials. Our last milkman used to come almost in the middle of the night, like about 5am, and made such a loud racket moving crates about on the back of his truck right outside my house that I got rid of him. Always outside our house, don't know why. I think he still has a local round but much diminished. Perhaps they should go back to the glass bottles with all the talk of plastic waste. Ours can be recycled though.I remember having milk delivered to us in glass bottles. I was listening to Pat Boone, Paul Anka, Johnny Cash, Marty Robbins; Peter, Paul & Mary, and several others whose names don't come to me at the moment.Which pop singers did you like when you were young? I definitely wasn't an Elvis fan, I preferred Tommy Steele or Adam Faith. I also liked Neil Sedaka and the Everleys.
Adam Faith is quite a name, isn't it? :)Which pop singers did you like when you were young? I definitely wasn't an Elvis fan, I preferred Tommy Steele or Adam Faith. I also liked Neil Sedaka and the Everleys.
...the set used to take minutes to warm up, didn't it? and half the time what was available seemed to be the test transmission page...I remember seeing television for the first time when I was a small child at the home of one of my dad's friends; black and white and Muffin the Mule with Annette Mills.

And a jug to pour the milk into ( before they went to bottles) Do you still get glass bottles?
Our teacher warmed the milk bottles on the radiator , because of ice chips in them...I HATED warm milk and still do!!!! lol
I still have a milkman - like to support the locals
So, I still get milk in bottles , with a silver top lid xx
