They aren't.
It's an ugly, derogatory term used for children without a father.
Not orphans or adopted children.
The reason it's ugly....
It's a backhanded slur against the person's mother claiming she was a prostitute or a "easy"/slutty woman.
The largest demographic in the USA is single parent families.

I don't recall ever hearing orphans, adopted children, children of divorce, or children born out of wedlock referred to as "bastards" except in the history books where legitimacy was necessary to claim legal inheritance or royal succession rights. In the US, I think any claim backed by DNA evidence is sufficient these days.
According to the CDC, 40.0% of all births in the US were out-of-wedlock (as of 2023), so I'm pretty confident it doesn't have the stigma it used to have.

Sometimes children are orphaned when both their parents die, whether murdered or in an accident.

Looking for someone to blame is a bastard of a thing!
Thats what Adam did when he blamed God for giving him a wife.
It all your fault God, pretty much to some people.
Perhaps a mindset that goes like this: "I didnt ask to be born in this world - you owe me something in return."

I have never heard of orphans or adopted children being called bastards. "Bastard", although now used as a swear word, originally meant a child born to unmarried parents. Orphans are children whose parents have died, whether or not those parents were married, and children are adopted for all sorts of reasons.
