You can talk the walk but are you walking the talk :clmSmlx .

Christian students write entire Gospel of John throughout campus - WKUHerald.com

I’m for anything that peacefully promotes the reading of the Bible. God bless the students who invested their time and energy to the project.

I would have liked to have seen the reporter ask students - those who had a role in the project as well as those who didn’t - what effect it had on their Bible reading habits.

A reading plan is a tool, a spiritual discipline. It should be a delight, not a burden, to use.

Spiritual disciplines are not about making you more precious to God. They’re about making God more precious to you.” - Matt Smethurst

I like the sentiment he expressed but I’d like to suggest a slight modification for consideration: replace the “you” with “us”.

Greetings Talons,
We are now reading the book of Mark .
Mark 1:38 Context
35And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed. 36And Simon and they that were with him followed after him. 37And when they had found him, they said unto him, All men seek for thee. 38And he said unto them, Let us go into the next towns, that I may preach there also: for therefore came I forth. 39And he preached in their synagogues throughout all Galilee, and cast out devils. 40And there came a leper to him, beseeching him, and kneeling down to him, and saying unto him, If thou wilt, thou canst make me clean. 41And Jesus, moved with compassion, put forth his hand, and touched him, and saith unto him, I will; be thou clean.
I like your post as it suggests that when we read a whole chapter we should try to find some aspect of the narrative that interests us, and try to learn by this. This can be in our private reading, or with our wife, or family members. In a family environment each of us can comment or discuss an interesting aspect and thus increase our understanding of a particular aspect and our reading becomes more beneficial and interesting rather than only a set routine..

You highlighted one part and set it in its context. The context is that Simon Peter is really suggesting that Jesus is missing out on an opportunity to build on the popularity that had been produced due to his preaching and especially his many miracles the day before. But his need of prayer to avoid this shallow popularity and his need to ask a blessing to continue his work elsewhere is an indication that his ministry needed to be to humbly preach the word and make disciples of those who would listen to his word, rather than gain a following based upon the excitation of his miracles.

Another part of your selection is that Jesus heals a leper. We are used to reading this, but the uniqueness of such a great miracle is remarkable. We are conscious of this incurable disease today, but it is now rare except in a few parts of India. Some help to the next generation comes when the leper's children are given better nutrition and mainly isolated from their parents as practised in one location.

Kind regards
Trevor

“Blessed Lord, who caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning: Grant us so to hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life, which you have given us in our Savior Jesus Christ; …”

***

For my trinitarian readers, the quote from Thomas Cranmer continues “…; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.”

***

The point I wish to emphasize: The Father has caused the holy scriptures - the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament - to be written for our learning. What are you doing with your Bible?

Hear, mark, learn, inwardly digest - for a reason: holding fast the blessed hope of the life of the age to come.

“I wonder what the result would be if we all kept a chart for one week and put down on paper the amount of time which we spent in reading God’s word and things which help us to understand it, and the time we spent reading newspapers and novels or watching films?” - Martyn Lloyd-Jones

My chart would look very different today than it would have 25 years ago, 10 years ago, even 5 years ago.

Our Sitz im Leben (situation in life) changes but what shouldn’t change for a follower of the Messiah is a commitment to read the scriptures regularly. I have time to read the scriptures daily. I have more time to do it in retirement than I did before I retired. Time is always spent on something. Time can be spent on many things; some are essential to our mental and physical health and well-being. Time must be spent on our spiritual health and well-being. Reading the Bible regularly is an important way of making an investment in our spiritual health and well-being.

Our respective charts will look different but all of our charts should look spiritually healthy. If they don’t, we need to make some changes so that they do.

How’s your chart looking this week?

Enter the 5122 Bible reading plan

I want to share the Scripture reading plan that helped me work through the Bible for the first time as a new believer — a plan that fundamentally changed my relationship with God's Word.

Warning: This plan is intensive. It involves reading 10 chapters of Scripture PER DAY. Depending on the section you're in, that can be a lot.

But if you want to engage with the text and drink deeply from it, experiencing Scripture from different angles each day as one comprehensive multi-millennial story, I think you're going to love it.

Think of it like spiritual leg day. Except every day is leg day.

And the weights you're lifting are God's Word.

And God is your trainer.

The 5122 Plan Explained

The plan is called 5122 (five-one-two-two), which helps you remember its structure. Every day you read:

  • 5 Psalms.
  • 1 chapter of Proverbs.
  • 2 chapters of the Old Testament.
  • 2 chapters of the New Testament.
You read straight through each section in linear fashion. When you reach the end of a book (like Psalms), you start over from the beginning.

I didn't invent this plan. It was taught to me by my friend Garrett, a husband, father, and former Air Force B2 bomber test pilot — one of the handful of men who has blessed me most on my Christian walk.

When we met in mid-2023, he asked if I was reading Scripture daily. When I said no, he explained why that was a problem and taught me this reading plan.

“The more you read the Bible, the more you will be astonished with it.” - C.H. Spurgeon

Some people have a problem picking up the Bible daily. I don’t understand how people who read the Bible regularly are easily able to put it down.
