I’d say that is a misunderstanding. The verse is a warning against hypocrisy, having one standard for yourself and another for others.

Restraining from judgement shows understanding that we're all sinners, and that we all ultimately will face the eternal Judge: our Father in Heaven, and thus all He asks of us is that instead of being another's judge and jury, we leave that to Him, and ask Him to help us apply mercy towards them, which is a form of love, or charity. He can help us achieve this through prayer, asking Him to replace our heart with His immaculate heart, and transform our human wisdom to a divine wisdom, and meditating upon Jesus's example of treatment towards others, etc. I also suggest the reciting the Lord's prayer that Jesus taught us.

It is best to not judge, if judgment isn't necessary, because if you do, how are you going to defend yourself when people judge you?

If we are determined to do good and treat others well, we will not be harsh critics, always looking for a figurative straw in our brother’s eye. Instead, we will acknowledge that we are imperfect and should therefore avoid being judgmental and critical of our fellow believers.

I like the way you have stated this. "Jesus advises against judgment..."
Too many put a period after "Judge not." when it should be a comma.
"Judge not, lest you be judged." Setting ourselves up for a fall.

As it applies to the broader Christian principles of love, forgiveness, and understanding...
- love doesn't judge other except as personal observation
- forgiveness understands that we have our own issues as well
- understanding means we need to focus on our own issues instead of on others shortcomings
