Biblically speaking, a "Soul" is not defined as "consciousness human like".
Genesis 2:7 KJV says the "Soul" is what comes into existence as a consequence of the union of the "Body" and the "Breath of Life". The death of the Soul occurs when the Breath of Life returns to God and the Body to the dust - the Soul ceases to exist until God reunites His Breath with the Body which He will again provide.

All souls belong to God and he dispenses them only one time when the breathe of life is issued to a body that breaks from the womb.
God has said even before formed in the womb he knows our name.
It is at his discretion that life is given !
