On July 4, 1776, Founding Fathers wrote the United States Declaration of Independence.
Twenty years later... The Government of America is already denying and denouncing its existence as a Christian nation. I found this very interesting.
The Treaty of Tripoli (Treaty of Peace and Friendship between the United States of America and the Bey and Subjects of Tripoli of Barbary) was signed in 1796. It was the first treaty between the United States of America and Tripoli (now Libya) to secure commercial shipping rights and protect American ships in the Mediterranean Sea from local Barbary pirates.
Treaty of Tripoli Article 11
Art. 11. As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion; as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquility, of Mussulmen (Muslims); and as the said States never entered into any war or act of hostility against any Mahometan (Mohammedan) nation, it is declared by the parties that no pretext arising from religious opinions shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries. This treaty was signed by John Adams.

My question then is on WHAT basis do people believe that United States is a CHRISTIAN NATION? This is not a mocking or fishing question... It's an honest one... Why do so many Christians consider America a Christian nation?
