Take a look at some of the pictures from this weather channel news report and imagine having to live in that:

Looks like LA California on a clear day ....
Brother I lived in California 20 years ago and it was nothing like that. We had a brown haze over us and it was slight. But over the years it gave way to clear.

I lived on the other side of the mountains at Edwards AFB.

I've seen the haze as you come over the mountain.

It looks like New Deli has fired up some of those coal plants....

Delhi (New and Old) had over 70 years to get its act together. Not one of the politicians at any level set up a special commission to ensure that the capital of India would be a clean and thriving city without pollution, congestion, crime, etc. And now it will be very painful for them to clean up their act. I am not sure if they have installed light rapid transit throughout the city, neither am I sure if manufacturing and energy producing plants were built at a safe distance. But this was all about poor planning and poor execution of plans.

The largest City in the world added light rail and bus lines over time. You can get anywhere in Tokyo if you have any common sense ....New Deli needs the right leader toslowly turn things around ...

"Slowly"? Not really. They need just the opposite.
Find the money ....It isn't there . Easy to say from the internet ....Hard to set the infrastructure and put in the solution physically .....Simple to figure out, Democrats have been solving the mythical Climate Change using the same tactics for years now.....Powers just figured out that renewables are expensive and the public can't afford the solution ......

I lived on a hill with a view over a large city, the centre of which was just 50 kms away from where I was living and on a clear day I could see low hills up to 130 kms away with my naked eye on the other side of that city. However, if I pulled my camera out and tried to take a picture of what I was seeing with my eyes, the distance that I could see was limited to less that 25 kms because of the smog that was produced by all of the vehicles being driven in and around that city.

When there was a sea breeze blowing to blow the smog away, the camera could record see as far as my eyes could see.

I was up on a mountain northeast of Pokora, looking down over Pokora which I could plainly see through the clouds, but the photograph I took was only of the cloud through which I was looking to see Pokora.

My experience in KTM which lies in an encircling valley with mountains all around, also suffers from smog, but when bands were enforced for three or four days the smog was blown away. The greatest cause of smog in KTM is the two stroke motorbikes which continually blow smoke out of their exhausts. The diesel buses were also a large contributor to the smog.

The photograph showing the smog in New Deli is giving a false impression of just how bad the smog really is.

Unless we have been and seen all of the issues that exist in New Deli, we can only comment out of our own ignorance about the conditions in New Deli.

Shalom

A number of years ago I was visiting friends who were staying on the 14th floor of an apartment block overlooking the ocean. As the sun slowly sank in the west, we all could see the reddish smog inversion that was level with the 12th floor of the building.

Now with regards to your response re dangerous air quality, a photograph does not do it justice because of the one-eyed view of a camera when compared with a person using their two eyes to see. If you want to see the difference, simply close one eye and see how that changes your depth perception. My son only has sight in one eye and his depth perception is not as good as my fading older aged eyesight with two "good" eyes.

In Asian countries the biggest smog polluters are motor bikes. That is why electric bikes are being encouraged for use in New Deli and other Asian cities, but the Indian sub-continent population is very mobile, and their petrol motorbikes often carry the whole family on long journeys to see their relatives and families. Something that Electric motor bike are unable to do efficiently or effectively.

I have lived on the Indian sub-continent for many extended periods over the past 26 years. I believe that my experience gained over the past 26 years does qualify the understanding that I have gleaned from my many visits over the years of the smog that floats above and over very large cities in the Indian sub-continent and what happens when "bands" that disrupt the normal activities of the population does with respect to air quality.

If you are going to be judgemental of my experiences here at home as well as in the Indian sub-continent, then please back it up with facts that shows that what I have posted is incorrect and not just your opinion.

Have you read the article in the OP, they shut everything down cause the air is dangerous there in India when I posted it.

@devin553344

Please discern that I was clearly stating that the picture that was published in the OP was misleading. A camera picture does not represent what is visible to the human eye. The optics of the camera tends to see every speck of pollution up and until the visible pollution "whites out" the picture because of its single aperture observation. Humans have two apertures through which we view what is in front of us and as such our depth of vision through the smog is far deeper than that of the camera. A person with only one eye to view their world will confirm that their depth perception is more limited and as such the "whiting out of their vision much earlier than for people with both eyes to see through.

The practices of the farmers in India to burn off the stubble on their farms certainly contribute to the problem before the Winter season kicks in.

As to the steps that the Indian government is taking to overcome the air quality in their country, they have to pull many levers to bring about change. One of the fuels for cooking in India is Buffalow manure, particularly in the country areas although Propane is also prominent, but the cost of propane for many is prohibitive.

We can sit in our armchairs and say what we like about what they need to do, but really none of us in the western affluent world are really qualified as to what is the most appropriate solution for India or any other third world country.

If you are looking for a fight over this issue, then go find someone else to problem solve with. I am not that interested in grandstanding.

Eeew. I lived in Southern California when I was a kid. We would get smoggy days and it smelled like rotten eggs.

It is there alright. Once you stop the waste, the corruption, and the mismanagement of funds. There is plenty of cash in India but absolutely no desire to PROPERLY address issues of infrastructure. The Indian governments at all levels have been dithering around for about 70 years.

Once Congress stops the corruption and mismanagement of funds ......there is plenty of money to solve a ultitude of problems .....The Infrastrure Bill was nothing but a pet project power grab and funds for Climate Change ...Inflation has rendered the entire bill useless ...
