You have to be born of the Spirit to inherit eternal life. Pets do not have the Paraclete in them. They do not bear the image of God. They are not resurrected on the last day, as per Jesus.

Having said that, however, if you miss your pets and feel sad after the resurrection, God will do something to ensure you are not sad for eternity. God may even give you your pets back. Matthew 7:

11 if you who are evil know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!
There will be animals on the new earth (heaven), Isaiah 65:

25 the wolf and the lamb will feed together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox.
There will be new pets.

God was very concerned that we not feel alone. So He gave us the animal kingdom, which we all love. There are domestic and wild animals. Many wild animals can be at least partly domesticated.

I'm sure God will not change in the future ages. He still will not want to leave us "alone in the wilderness." If anything love of the outdoors, and of creatures, will be enhanced. And the fulfillment will be much greater. You think? ;)

Thank you both for your posts.
Below is a dialog between an Catholic Church and a Presbyterian Church, located on opposite corners.
Their marques take up the debate by announcing each week’s sermon.

Week 1
Catholic Church: All dogs go to heaven.
Presbyterian Church: Only humans go to heaven: Read the Bible.

Week 2
CC: God loves all His creation, dogs included.
PC: Dogs don’t have souls; this is not open for debate.

Week 3
CC: Catholic dogs go to heaven; Presbyterian dogs can talk to their pastor.
PC: Converting to Catholicism does not magically grant your dog a soul.

Week 4
CC: Free dog souls with conversion.
PC: Dogs are animals; there aren’t any rocks in heaven either

Week 5
CC: All rocks go to heaven!
