I do believe Genesis. The firmament is not some solid dome over the earth. If it was, Genesis wouldn't say that birds fly in the firmament:

Gen 1:20 And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven.

Are you aware of the definition of firmament?

You are correct that "The firmament is not some solid dome over the earth." Birds DO "fly in the firmament" because the firmament is the SPACE created by the "dome"/DIVISION.

And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters. And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so. (Gen. 1:6-7)

I do try & engage them into meaningful discussion as to what actual verses they believe teach that or why :-
- Earth is not sphere
- Sun is approx 50km in diameter
- Sun is approx 5000km away
- North pole can't see all the stars the equator can
- Why the same object is heavier at the north pole than the equator.

They advise like them the answers will be given to me in prayer.
