Hi Steve, the Bible never really says they became Christ's followers, however there is a reason why their account is listed in scripture. It really helps in identifying Jesus as the promised Messiah. It serves as a warning example that satan is very active and wants to squelch Christians. The account helps to put us on guard that it is important to keep using the Bible as a guideline to make sure we are in the faith, and not just ignorantly serving God the way we think He should be served.

Their account also assisted in revealing timeline as well. For instance, were you aware that they did not reach Jesus until he was close to two years in age? Many are unaware of that and display nativity scenes with them at the manger.
