There are nine gifts of the Spirit, or in Greek terms nine charismas where we get the word charismatic. Those of you that are secessionists need not read this as you will disagree with everything I will say.

These nine charismas are listed in 1 Corinthians 12. There are other gifts and ministries that are not included in this chapter, such as Ephesians 4:11. These gifts were the province of the ascended Christ to give. It is important to note these are gifts/ministries, not positions.

I will list the nine and then make a few points for clarification.

    1. Words of wisdom
    2. The gift of knowledge
    3. The gift of faith
    4. The gift of healing
    5. The working of miracles
    6. The gift of prophecy
    7. The ability to distinguish between spirits (discernment)
    8. Various kinds of tongues
    9. The interpretation of tongues

It is important to note that the original Greek tells us that they are spirituals. The word gift is not in the original. The word spirituals mean supernatural so we are not talking about making the coffee after the meeting.

The reason the Holy Spirit gives these nine charismas is for the common good. In other words for the benefit of the body of Christ, not for the individual who is operating in the charisma.

Every one of them is inspired by the Holy Spirit and he is the one that decides who will use what gift. We, regardless of our rank or position have no control over their uses and by whom.

The Spirit can use the lowliest people if he chooses to be used and to use any of these nine charismas.

I have been asked if a person can have more than one of the gifts? The answer is simple. That is up to the Holy Spirit to decide. They can if the Spirit so decides. They can't if the Spirit so decides.

They are given at the will of the Spirit so it is important to be ready at any time to be available for the Holy Spirit to work through you and manifest any one of the nine gifts.

That will do for now. I will come back to it for more unraveling of the subject.

    Hi Marksman,

    I'd add from Romans 12:

    6 Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith;
    7 Or ministry, let us wait on our ministering: or he that teacheth, on teaching;
8 Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness.

    1. Words of wisdom
    2. The gift of knowledge
    3. The gift of faith
    4. The gift of healing
    5. The working of miracles
    6. The gift of prophecy
    7. The ability to distinguish between spirits (discernment)
    8. Various kinds of tongues
    9. The interpretation of tongues
    10. Gift of Serving
    11. Gift of Teaching
    12. Gift of Encouragement
    13. Gift of Leading
    14. Gift of Showing Mercy

Are we on the same page?

    Much love!

Some will say that all of these gifts are limited to the scriptures, as if no gifts were given. Obviously, that premise is wrong. Yet there are those who argue that point here daily.

I have been moved to 6 of the 9 gifts listed...as the Spirit leads. It goes by availability I think. :)

One small point. I am talking about the nine gifts (charismas) of the Holy Spirit and I did mention other gifts. You have added these other gifts to the nine.

So true and that is why I said at the beginning that cessationists need not apply.

The first verse is very interesting. it says....

1Co 12:1 My friends, you asked me about spiritual gifts. (CEV)

1Co 12:1 But concerning the spiritual matters, brothers, I do not wish you to be ignorant. (Literal)

1Co 12:1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I would not have you ignorant. (Modern King James)

1Co 12:1 And concerning the spiritual things, brethren, I do not wish you to be ignorant; (Youngs Literal)

The word spiritual in the Greek is pneumatikos, where we get our pneumatic meaning air. This denotation suggests that there are gifts that are not spiritual. That is for a discussion another day. But these nine are definitely spiritual and Holy Spirit activated.

The word pneumatikos means non carnal, supernatural, spiritual. From this, we can see that the nine charismas are definitely something that happens in the supernatural realm. For example, if I lay hands on someone to be healed, there is a transference of spiritual power into that person's body which will put things into order and make them whole.

That means we have no power to do anything. We are totally dependant on the Holy Spirit to do his work and if he doesn't no one gets healed.

The word gifts is not in the original, so the original translation in each case is "You asked me about spirituals." "Now concerning spirituals"

The word "not" is interesting. What it denotes is an absolute negative. Put it another way. Under no circumstances do I want you to be ignorant. This shows how emphatic Paul was that the Corinthian believers were fully versed in the operation of the Holy Spirit through his gifts. That being the case, it shows how important they were to the life of the church. A church without the charismas is a church without power.

And ignorant means because of lack of information or intelligence. This suggests to me that all leadership in the church has a responsibility to teach and demonstrate the power of the Holy Spirit through the charismas. If they do not they might as well not be there.

Secessionists believe there are about TWENTY THREE gifts of the Spirit. Three of those were to definitely come to an end after the apostles passed on and the Bible was completed. Also there were several sign gifts ("the signs of an apostle") limited to the apostolic period and for the apostles and their companions.

However there are many other gifts to be looked at and used.

Can I ask something- do the gifts change ?
I mean if a person experiences the gift of knowledge, do they always have that gift or does the Holy Spirit give and take back , or perhaps give different gifts to people at different times.
I realise that there can be seasons within a Christians life, so are their seasons with the gifts ?
Or, can our own lives numb the gifts , they are still there but if circumstances affect your walk with God then the gifts are affected

A gift can be given just once in a lifetime. The thing is to be available...so yes, different gifts to people at different times.

It depends on your disposition. You are far more likely to operate in a gift if....

    1. You have encountered the Lord and received of His life.
    2. You are actively promoting the kingdom of God and the gospel of this.
    3. You are ministering to and with the brethren.

Based on our disposition we can be more open to certain gifts. But all the gifts should be by spontaneous inspiration.

Imagine an interpretation of a tongue coming only days later? What's the use of that? A word of wisdom is necessary in the moment...or else it will be too late. A word of knowledge is good for unbelievers because it reveals something that no one should know.

But all this as the Spirit inspires. :)

I agree with the first 2 statements....but that last qualifier...praying in tongues.... is the result of the very human tendency of adding to the truth so as to exaggerate something so that it becomes a half-truth.

Praying in tongues is NOT a gift of the Spirit...but a prayer technique. Many people pray in tongues but few if any know anything about walking in the power of God...in reality. I'm not against praying in any form. I think the seeming necessity of taking things too far takes away from the truth.

The important thing is to walk in the light..in supernatural power. Who cares what you pray like? To confuse these things as being the same...is a sign of the present dead church. It only serves to fool people into believing they are fulfilling the call to a deeper walk...whereby it is just becoming more religious.

The gifts of the Spirit are real. I've heard messages given in an unknown tongue...spontaneously..being from the Lord. One time in a meeting I was given the interpretation...rapid fire...so that many people testified later that this was from the Lord (even among non-tongue speakers). But I've heard a lot of prayer technique as well. Tongues is the easiest thing in the world to fake...or to claim something beyond what it is.

If a person can do something at will...it isn't a gift of the Spirit. It is a technique...a knowledge of something.

Some live in a fantasy world as make believers.
They make believe they are...."moving in the Spirit"
In reality they are daydreaming in the flesh.
Instead of doing what scripture calls us to do,they imagine things are going on that really are not,to give themselves a subjective assurance.
In this make believe world of imaginary, binding and loosing, speaking rhema words, the anointing breaking the yoke, etc they.have imaginary reality that they prefer over the real world.
Eventually some of them understand that in fact they have been "moving in the flesh".

And this is how you get charismatic denominations.

I have discovered in life that whatever people ADD to the knowledge and simple walk in the presence of God....becomes that thing at the expense of the truth. People seem to have a way of taking things too far.... wishful thinking...or as you aptly said...subjective assurance.

How much of church these days is just giving the people what they want...and what people want to hear?

The truth has become truly offensive to modern ears.

    GINOLJC, to all.

to the OP, good topic. and many of the posters are on target. but may we say this just for starters, consider the very first gift on the list. 1 Corinthians 12:8 "For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit".
not saying any are right or wrong, but consider this. these two gifts are actually one Gift. the word of wisdom, not wisdom her self, but a word of wisdom gives "understanding". and the "word of knowledge". what gift fit this pattern of Knowledge and understanding? let's see. Jeremiah 3:15 "And I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding".

so the first two gifts are really one gift which is the Pastoral Gift. yes pastoring is a gift and not an office. this is bared out in the same chapter at verse 28. 1 Corinthians 12:28 "And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues".

now, God set, or ordained these gifts in the church what are the pastoral gifts. one might say well we don't see pastor in verse 28. well it's there, the apostle is a pastor. let us open your spiritual eyes. Paul was an apostle, right.... right. let's see if he's a pastor. just go to the very next chapter of 1 Corinthians, chapter 13, listen.

1 Corinthians 13:1 "Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become [as] sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.
1 Corinthians 13:2 "And though I have [the gift of] prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing".

here, the apostle said that he had the "Gift" of prophecy, meaning that he's a prophet. the second gift set or ordained in the church. then he said, "and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge". knowledge, and understanding, Jeremiah 3:15 "And I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding". so the apostle is a PASTOR.

What about the third ordained gift, "Teacher?", according to 1 Corinthians 12:28 . 1 Corinthians 4:17 "For this cause have I sent unto you Timotheus, who is my beloved son, and faithful in the Lord, who shall bring you into remembrance of my ways which be in Christ, as I teach every where in every church". so the apostle Paul was also a prophet, and a teacher in the church, because God "set" or ordaind in his church apostles first, second prophets, and teachers, which are "pastors", that feed the flock of God. no where in his word did he say that they are ceased or done away with.

a posted stated that a person can have more than one gift, TRUE, as we just seen with Paul. this is a good topic which has many truths and eliminate the tradition of men.

a re-read of this post might be nessary for clarity

Satan is having a good laugh as he 'binds' the Church with his lies. The Holy Spirit and his gifts are vital to the life and health of the true Church. To accept his lies is blasphemy. The Church needs to discover what it really means to be indwelt by the Holy Spirit who is the power, the fuel, the driving force. Without him and his ministry the Church may as well pack up and close its doors. Without the Spirit's gifts and power the Church is running on empty and will soon come to a full stop.

Remember in the second of the Chronicles of Narnia how the wicked queen immobilized Aslan's troops with her wand? Well Satan is doing just that to the Church with his lies. In the book the followers of Aslan were brought back to life by his breathing new life into the stone statues they had become. We must not allow ourselves to become stone statues, unable to take part in the spiritual battles which are all around us. We MUST allow the Holy Spirit to impart his gifts, all of his gifts for the good of the body of Christ.

    Hi marksman,

These from Romans are also charismata, but I apologize, I must have misunderstood your intent.

Not to mention . . . the Holy Spirit can give any gift He pleases.
