Greater than John?

Matthew 11:11
“Assuredly, I say to you, among those born of women there has not risen one greater than John the Baptist; but he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.

Why did Jesus make this statement about John when he was greater than John and also born of a woman?

The bible tells us that John was filled with the Holy Spirit even in his mothers womb Luke 1:15-16

but Jesus was born of the Holy Spirit... Matthew 1:18, Luke I:35

Looking at the context of the chapter, Jesus was speaking about prophets. Certainly, Jesus did prophesy, but it seems to me he was speaking of prophets of past time. it's a good point though.

I think it was Jesus's way of acknowledging John's important work on Earth. In heaven, his work will be displayed for all to see by all the people he placed before himself. As we know, the first will be last and the last shall be first......which is only a problem for narcissistic Christians on Earth - it is an honor for people like John.

The role of John the Baptist is one of great privilege in that he was chosen to prepare the way for the Lord Jesus (Mal. 3:1).

Jesus confirmed the above by saying John was more than a prophet because he was also the one to announce Jesus as the Lamb of God and to baptize Him to begin His ministry and preach the Kingdom of God/Heaven (Lk.16:16).

The least in heaven is Jesus (He bore or was laden with our sins) yet greater than John.

If Jesus had just been born of woman, He would not been great as He is.
