Hi!

I'm Jim from Las Vegas Nevada USA and I look forward to interesting exchanges!

I'm an Orthodox (like "Greek Orthodox" or "Russian Orthodox") believer having come from a Pentecostal Holiness church from where I went to Moscow, Russia to help start a Bible College for the unregistered RUssian Pentecostal churh.

Now I attend a Russian ORthodox church. (Makes me an "Orthocostal" I suppose........ :) )

Great to see you joining us, Jim. At some point in the future, I'd be interested in hearing how Pentecostal marries with Orthodox teaching. But that's for later.

Glad to see you join the Board from the glitter of Vegas.

Stan,

How do I stop getting this profusion of email in my inbox? I awoke this morning to 22 email from CB.
LOL....turn OFF email notifications in your profile page. I don't have it activated as I come here deliberately every day and just look for new posts.

Jim, this has been a topic that I'd love to no more about but didn't know where to start! I read an Orthodox work, The Mountain of Silence, about a year and a half ago and remember being struck by some of the similarities between Pentecostal practices, sans the monastery of course! At the risk of sounding totally off-base, I had a very interesting dream with an Orthodox style of worship and I've been trying to put that together ever since. Pentecostalism has intrigued me because of it's growth, and Orthodoxy itself is only something I've become more aware of recently.

I am not a Pentecostal, but I have a strong strand of Wesleyanism that runs deep, so I am sympathetic to the Pentecostal/Holiness tradition. Even Wesley seemed to share some things with the Orthodox.

Regardless, I digress. Welcome to the community! I'd love to hear about your experiences, and hopefully we have some things to offer you in return for mutual growth! :)

Response to Hammerstone:

What I find in the few Orthodox churches I have attended is that the term "pentecostal" seems to bring up images of people rolling in the asiles and hysterically babbling in "tongues." Operating in the gifts of the Holy Spirit are not part of the Orthodox tradition or culture so they tend to ignore it.

This is a strange experience for me since Orthodoxy is a more mystical branch of Christianity as compared with much of the western church which appears to focus on intellectual aspects of the faith.

There is a similar but not identical experience among some manastics called hessychism. You may read about it on line. It's best known defender and proponent is St. Gregory Palamas.
